GREENVILLE, Pa.—Thiel College hosted television anchors, reporters and photographers from Pittsburgh, Youngstown, and Erie on Tuesday to speak with students about careers in communication and television.
Thiel College students met and learned from distinguished television journalists Lindsey Watson and Josh Frketic from WKBN in Youngstown, Ari Moyer from WICU in Erie, recently retired photographer Dave Bernhard from WJET and WICU in Erie, and Katherine Amenta, most recently from WPXI in Pittsburgh. The journalists were guests of Thiel College Instructional Technology Specialist and AV Coordinator Paul Coatsworth.
During the session, the journalists shared invaluable insights into the television news industry, covering a wide range of topics that are crucial for aspiring media professionals. They discussed the dynamic nature of news reporting, essential skills for budding journalists, and what employers in the media industry are looking for in new hires.
Students also learned about what makes a journalist marketable in today’s competitive environment. The speakers highlighted the importance of adaptability, technical skills, and a genuine passion for storytelling as key attributes that can set candidates apart.
The event also focused on the personal aspects of working in television news, with each journalist sharing why they are passionate about their profession. These personal stories added a profound layer of depth to the discussion, illustrating the impact and responsibilities of journalists in shaping public perception and informing the community.
Coincidentally, Watson was on campus last week when she was awarded the James Pedas Communication Professional of the Year award.
The event took place in the Stamm Lecture Hall of the James Pedas Communication Center.
