GREENVILLE, Pa.—Miranda Callihan, who teaches chemistry at Karns City High School, has received recognition for her outstanding dedication to mentoring and educating students. She was honored at the third annual Thiel College Mentor of the Year Awards.
Callihan was nominated for the 2024 Sarah Taylor-Rogers, Ph.D. ’69 H’19 STEM Mentor of the Year by Thiel sophomore psychology and public policy double major Brooke Griffith ’26.
“Ms. Callihan teaches in a way that gets women (and men) interested in STEM in a fun, positive learning environment,” Griffith said. “She helped start a school recycling program and helped me with my Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science project. I still remember many things that she taught me about organic organisms which are relevant to my college neuroscience classes at Thiel.”
The event recognizes extraordinary professional and civic contributions, celebrating the deep connections they foster within the community. Overall, six educators and six professionals from the arts; business; media, science, technology, engineering, math; education; and were recognized this year.
“Many of us fondly recall a teacher who influenced our college choice or career path,” said Thiel College President Susan Traverso, Ph.D. “The Mentor Awards is an opportunity to recognize those mentors and role models who profoundly motivated a Thiel student.”
