GREENVILLE, Pa.—Charlotte Hornets Assistant General Manager Dotun Akinwale Jr. ’13 was among several professionals who were recognized for making an impact as a role model for high school and college students through his professional achievements and commitment to civic engagement. He was honored at the third annual Thiel College Mentor of the Year Awards.
Akinwale was presented with the 2024 Gary Witosky ‘79 Business Professional of the Year Award.
“My experience at Thiel College was instrumental in my path,” Akwinale said.
His basketball journey began long before his executive days. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in business administration in 2013 and started his professional journey with an internship that led to a role as a basketball operations coordinator with the Orlando Magic, setting the stage for his future successes in the NBA. Before joining the Hornets, he held the position of Vice President of Player Personnel with the Atlanta Hawks, where his leadership and eye for talent were part of shaping the team’s roster and scouting operations.
Akinwale said the relationships with, “all of my teammates, (Thiel men’s basketball coach Tim) Loomis, the Thiel community in general” were an important part of his experience as an undergraduate.
The event recognizes extraordinary professional and civic contributions, celebrating the deep connections they foster within the community. Overall, six educators and six professionals from the arts; business; media, science, technology, engineering, math; education; and were recognized this year.
“Many of us fondly recall someone who influenced our college choice or career path, and the Mentor Awards is an opportunity to recognize individuals who have profoundly motivated Thiel students,” Thiel College President Susan Traverso, Ph.D. said. “Thiel is committed to our region, so it is equally important to recognize the many contributions of professionals who serve as role models for our high school and college students.”
