GREENVILLE, Pa.—Students from Thiel College’s radio station WXTC 88.1 FM, in conjunction with the Office of Student Life, campus ministries and other campus organizations, are collecting donations from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8 in the Howard Miller Student Center’s Rotunda Bistro for Hurricane Harvey victims.

Collections also will take place at Fresh Grounds, located at 172 Main St. Thiel College collections of hygiene items will continue through the week at the office of campus pastor Jayne Thompson. Her offices are also in the Howard Miller Student Center.

“With all disasters, the focus is usually on food or monetary donations. Sometimes we forget that people who have been evacuated don’t have basic necessities such as hygiene products,” WXTC station manager Kira Snyder ’18 said.

Items being collected for this relief effort include bar soap, deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes and feminine hygiene products. Cash donations are also accepted.

All collected items and donations will be distributed to flood victims through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This part of the relief effort will be coordinated by Thompson.

“This seems like the fastest, most direct way to get help to people. The ELCA Disaster Response has distribution networks throughout Texas and Louisiana that serve all people in need,” WXTC managing adviser Peg Watts said. “One-hundred percent of the monetary gifts will go directly to the those in need. We know what we’re collecting will get to where it’s needed. And, we hope it lets the flood victims know—Thiel College and northwest Pennsylvanians care about them. Thiel and WXTC’s students want to help make a traumatic time a little more bearable.”

People who drop off donations at the student center between 4-7 p.m. will be treated to music courtesy of WXTC staff and thank you giveaway items from Thiel’s Office of Student Life. Community members can also drop items and monetary donations off at Fresh Grounds on Friday and throughout the weekend.

“These are some of the items not always considered to be necessities. But, they’re small things that can make your quality of life better—even when chaos is all around you,” WXTC public relations and outreach director Bella Vapenik ’20 said.
