Thiel Honors Convocation will feature student speaker and celebrate academic achievement

GREENVILLE, Pa.-- The annual Thiel College Academic Honors Convocation will feature a student speaker and celebrate the academic achievements of more than 400 students at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 in the William A. Passavant Memorial Center.

Since 1928, the Thiel College community has celebrated the Academic Honors Convocation to recognize the academic achievements of Thiel students. First-year, sophomore, junior, and senior students who earned Dean’s List honors will be awarded certificates to mark their successes. Students who have received named and endowed scholarships will also be formally recognized, along with members of Alpha Chi, the National College Honor Scholarship Society, and the Dietrich Honors Institute.

Malajah Johnson ’23, a senior biology major from Pittsburgh, will be the student speaker for this year’s convocation. She was a recipient of the Thiel Learning Commons Extraordinary Effort award during the Fall 2022 semester and received a fellowship funded by the National Science Foundation to participate in summer research at Duquesne University. Johnson is also a first-generation student blogger for the I’mFirst! organization and is a member of several clubs and organizations on campus, including Active Minds Club, Thiel Bible Study, and Pen Pal Club, of which she is the President. Johnson is also a tutor in the Thiel Learning Commons, a member of Tri-Beta, the national biology honor society, and a recipient of the E. Frank and Dorothy Brosius Scholarship Fund and the Dr. Florence West Tribute to Dr. Bly Scholarship.

Last year, Jamin Wentling ’22, a 2018 Greenville High School graduate and a neuroscience major, was selected as the first student speaker at the event.
