Library patron passes on good experience at Langenheim Memorial

Robbie Mumford shared a message with the members of the Langenheim Memorial Library.

I just want to pass on my experience visiting your library on Monday. I had an online test to take where you need an environment free of basically everything. My desk is far from that. I came in, in the morning about 8:30 to see if it was feasible to use your facilities. I was greeted at the desk. I explained my situation and asked about guest WIFI. [The student] was wonderful, even giving directions to the help desk if I had any issues. I went upstairs, found a nice room and made sure I was able to connect. Everything went well.
Monday evening about 6:00 I returned. I was again greeted, this time by a young lady. I made my way upstairs and settled in. I spent about an hour in you facility. Upon leaving I was told to have a good night.
This was the first time in your library as I graduated from another institution in 1998. I really appreciate the hospitality that I received and for the use of your facilities. I’m very grateful that you allow “outsiders” in and allow guest WIFI. Please keep up the good work.

Young alumna Belsito shares journey from teaching to accounting

Jackie Belsito ’11 was the featured speaker at the March 20 Ruth A. Miller Senior Business Seminar. Belsito is the controller for Kaulig Companies in Hudson, Ohio.

“Jackie was deeply involved in campus life, balancing her time between the softball team, scorekeeping at volleyball games, and tutoring economics classes. She chose Thiel, like many of us have, for its tight-knit community and for the personalized interactions with faculty and staff.” Hailey McClain ’24

“Initially considering a career in teaching, Jackie's plans shifted when her aunt suggested she explore accounting for its promising job prospects after graduation. After just one semester of accounting studies, Jackie found herself fascinated with the subject, crediting Professor Ligo for igniting her passion.” Emma Hatfield ’25

“When asked why she found the non-profit sector fulfilling she informed us about how she loved the mission-driven work and that it made her feel like she was doing something meaningful.” George Tice ’24

Barr prepares graduates for what they will find after Thiel

John Barr ’70 was the featured speaker at the March 6 Ruth A. Miller Senior Business Seminar. Barr is a retired sales and marketing executive who spent much of his career with the Eastman Kodak Company and has also served on the Thiel College Board of Trustees.

“John applied to only three schools when looking for colleges. They were Lycoming College, Grove City College, and Thiel College. He knew when he stepped onto campus, Thiel was the one he wanted to go to. He started as a sociology major for his first three years and did not want anything to do with business. Eventually, he took a business class with (Professor David) Miller and loved it. He graduated with a minor in business.” Nick DiLullo ’24

“During his senior year, Barr accepted a position at Kodak in Rochester, NY, where he dedicated 28 years of his career. Despite facing challenges, including being let go from his job at Kodak, Barr remained resilient and motivated not to fail. His instincts guided him to embrace change, leading to personal and professional growth.” Jackson Pletcher ’24

“Unlike many of the previous speakers, John Barr did not make his speech about his own life, but rather focused more on what struggles we will face, and how we should face them as we start to move forward from college to the workforce. He also focused on how to determine your own purpose and how he determined his purpose as life presented challenges to him.” Alex Martin ’24

“John Barr started us off with two questions, ‘What is my purpose?’, and ‘How will my purpose help motivate me to make a difference in the world?’. This question forced me to truly think and listen intently to see how he discovered his purpose.” Zach Bergstresser ’25

“The overall message I got from John was that we have this one truly incredible life, and we should make the most of it all.“ Damion Grinnell ’25

“Overall, John was a fantastic speaker and a huge thanks to him!” Connor Lovic ’24

Taylor shares experiences in non-profit and governmental accounting

Damen Taylor ’95 was the featured speaker at the February 28 Ruth A. Miller Senior Business Seminar. Taylor has 25 years of experience in the field of non-profit and governmental accounting. He also serves as the vice president of the Thiel College Alumni Board and has been a frequent speaker on campus, both in this class and at other venues.

“As a first-generation college student, his choice to pursue accounting stemmed from a pivotal moment in ninth grade when he failed American civics. During a summer spent grounded, he stumbled upon his mother's old accounting books and immersed himself in managing the finances of ABC Golf out of sheer boredom.” Jackson Pletcher ’24

“Taylor placed great importance on keeping participants engaged and having fun.” Yeryoung Kim ’24

“During his presentation, he was very enthusiastic and made a point to keep the audience engaged throughout the duration.” Julianne Slagle ’24

“Taylor then moved on to talking about his four Fs, which are Focus, Family, Faith, and Finish. He says that our current focus is to graduate from Thiel. He then brought up that only 37% of Americans have a college degree. This shows that we know how to finish what we started, even when things get difficult.” Alex Martin ’24

“He credits his professors for not taking it easy on him and pushing him. He says because of that, he is who he is today with his personality and resilience in his work life and home life.” Nick DiLullo ’24

“When asked about his favorite memory from Thiel, he mentioned the moment he walked across the stage at graduation.” Emma Hatfield ’25
