Jim Miale ’85 was the featured speaker at the Ruth A. Miller Senior Business Seminar that was held on Feb. 8. Miale is the Vice President of Commercial Banking at ERIEBANK in Meadville, Pa. His presentation focused on the questions “What Can Thiel Do for You?” and “What Can You Do for Thiel?” which he answered by sharing many of his life experiences including his on-going relationship with the College and his fellow alumni.
“Jim was an IUP basketball commit, but at the last second, he decided to study and play basketball at Thiel instead. He realized that there was a big difference between the two schools. Thiel referred to Jim by his name and asked him about his life and what was going on with him. IUP, on the other hand, referred to Jim by his social security number.” Emily Grandy ’23
“Jim played three sports at Thiel including football, basketball, and baseball. Jim graduated from Thiel in 1985 and majored in accounting and business administration.” Amy Jackson ’23
“Jim Miale, an alumnus of Thiel, spoke to us about his journey in the business world. He started by sharing the opportunities that Thiel has provided him throughout his career.” Tyler Zere ’23
“Jim ends up graduating and getting a job at First National Bank in Hermitage, Pa. Jim worked there for 19 years and then decided to sell his house and move back in with his parents. While doing this, he went to Robert Morris University and obtained his master’s degree in business education. For the next six-and-a-half years, Jim taught and coached at Mount Union Area High School in Mount Union, Pa.” Matt Castles ’23
“In 2012 he left teaching to be a Commercial Loan Officer at ERIEBANK, where he currently works. He presented his whole backstory to us, asked everyone in the class why we chose Thiel, and then told us his story.” Autumn Gourley ’24
“Before making a full-fledged presentation, he asked each of us for a self-introduction, including name, hometown, high school, major, and how we ended up Thiel College. This activity was linked to his presentation topic, the importance of networking and finding common ground.” Seoyeon Choo ’23
“Next, in his presentation, he emphasized ‘What Thiel can do for you.” Thiel can provide a great education, professors and admission care, lifelong friends, amazing memories, and preparation for interviews.” Asher Patton ’23
“In his presentation, Jim also talked about what Thiel can do for us students and what we, as students, can do for Thiel. He mentioned that Thiel gives us a great education, professors that care, lifelong friends, and most importantly, Thiel helps students get real jobs. What we, as students, can do for Thiel is to make sure that we get involved, stay connected, come back, and support it.” Emily Grandy ’23
“To think that Mr. Miale was almost at Indiana University of Pennsylvania; it would have changed his life course in so many ways. He believes the same thing. Mr. Miale talks about the friends that he made at Thiel. He mentions the connections that he has had for so many years. He talks about his twin friends who broke him out of his shell and who he still gets together with to this day.” Natalie Zgurich ’23
“Even though Jim’s presentation did come with an abundance of advice and guidance, the most beneficial thing that I got out of it was a reminder of how much of a family and helpful network Thiel alumni actually are.” Allison Walsh ’24
“I asked Jim, ‘What made you want to stop what you were doing with accounting and go into teaching?’ He stated that he was in a rut with what he was doing at his job. He found that he really enjoyed opportunities where he was able to teach other people in his field. He was also coaching pee wee football at that time, so he took those two factors as signs to go back to school to get a teaching degree.” Ian Yahner ’24
“A truly inspirational speaker. Jim Miale has experience in many industries, and it shows in his voice with the passion that he projects onto students like me. He instilled confidence that we will find our way in the world even if there does not seem to be a clear path at that moment.” Natalie Zgurich ’23
“His one-line introduction of Thiel was "Best decision in my life." Seoyeon Choo ’23
“I believe that what he said about what Thiel can do for us is true, especially when it comes to the caring professors. From my own experience, I know that I got an amazing experience with Thiel, as did he.” Amy Jackson ’23
