Bauman named Thiel College head football coach

President Susan Traverso, Ph.D., and Director of Athletics Amy Schafer announced Wednesday the hiring of Sam Bauman as the head football coach at Thiel College.

“It’s with great enthusiasm that we welcome coach Sam Bauman to the College,” Traverso said. “He brings impressive leadership experience to his new role leading Tomcat football and is deeply committed to the success of student-athletes at Thiel.”

Bauman was the linebackers coach at the College of Wooster since 2013. He served as the team’s defensive coordinator the past seven seasons and was the special teams coordinator in 2013 and 2014.

“I am very excited to be named the next head football coach at Thiel College,” Bauman said. “I look forward to getting to know the players better and begin to work with them on building a successful football program here. I can’t thank President Traverso and Director of Athletics Amy Schafer enough for giving me this opportunity.”

“You’ve Been Loved” fundraiser

The Wellness Committee, with the help of Thiel’s Physician Assistant Program, sponsored the “You’ve Been Loved” campus event. Employees made donations and nominated colleagues to have their door or desk area decorated with hearts. “Love” continued to be shared over the course of two weeks, resulting in a collection of $507 with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the American Heart Association.

Student News

DePaulo shares insights on starting a career, completing a master’s degree, and balancing life and work

Dana DePaulo ’18 was the featured speaker at the February 16th Ruth A. Miller Senior Business Seminar.  Dana is the Assistant Director of Admissions at Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot, Pa.  Dana related how her experiences at Thiel prepared her for success in her career and how she has dealt with the significant challenges of working at a senior living and health care facility during the pandemic.

“Class this week was very interesting to me. Since Dana was a recent graduate of Thiel, it was very relatable. Not long ago she was in the exact same position as us. She had to ask herself the same question we all are right now: ‘what’s next?’.”  Kate Sollers ’22

“Dana was at the time working at a nursing home and had decided to continue working there while she looked for other opportunities. However, the administration at the nursing home recognized the hard work and ethics Dana had and presented her an opportunity to join the organization full time within their admissions department. Dana took the opportunity, went through the interview process, and found her answer to her post-graduation worries.”  Owen Sa ’22

“She spoke to the fact that sometimes what you’re looking for is right in front of you and that there is nothing wrong with staying close to home and not moving away to a big city to work for a large company.  She said it’s important to understand that everyone’s path is different and you have to choose what is right for you.”  Angela Sorg ’23

“She showed throughout her speech that not knowing exactly what you want to do is okay, and it’s okay to take some time to figure it out.”  Madeline DePalma ’22

“I liked when she emphasized that it was okay to find a job after college and take time to figure out what exactly you would like to do with your life. Sometimes I think people believe they need to know what they want to do for the rest of their lives by the time they graduate. I know this statement hit home for a lot of individuals.”  Maddison Neely ’22

“She admitted at first that there was a big learning curve with moving to a full-time job. She had to learn a bunch of new information and processes about how things worked, and she was even tasked with traveling to other branches to assist them.”  Trey Williams ’22

“I think that the biggest thing I took away from this presentation is to take advantage of the connections I have made and will make during my time at Thiel.”  Richard Crooks ’22

“The speech tonight was very focused around how Thiel’s faculty and friends make up your life’s biggest advocates in any situation. We learned from Dana that Thiel alumni are always willing to help you as a student.”  Brycen Dorfmeister ’22

“Every student here at Thiel is very blessed with such a great support group around them. All you have to do is ask for help and if a staff member doesn’t know they will get you to the person that does know. The presentation really made me feel better and more open to getting help from staff during this tough time.”  Logan Long ’22

“One of Dana’s favorite parts about Thiel is that you could always try something new, there was no pressure to look or feel a certain way and you were always supported. Dana loved the experience she had here, and she credits Thiel for her growth into the person she is today.”  Emily Sears ’22

“Dana said she wasn’t very good at first but got better at playing the flute by the time it was her senior year. The lesson that I was taught from that story was sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone and try new things, even if you fail at first.” Adonis Scriven ’22

“She also spoke about comfort zones and how if you are uncomfortable, you are trying new things and that is when you will enjoy your job. However, when you get comfortable is when you glide through life and start becoming bored with your daily job.”  John Retton ’22

“One of the main lessons I learned was how important a mentor can be to you. It is someone who is there for you, and you can always go to for honest advice or during hard situations like Dana did.”  Trey Williams ’22

“When the pandemic hit, they had to shut their doors to all visitors and the company had to find ways to not let anyone go. During the pandemic Dana helped with patient care to keep her job, but she didn’t mind as it created bonds with the residents of the nursing home.”  Emily Sears ’22

“DePaulo also touched on engaging in new environments and experiences throughout life. One example she discussed was having to work in patient care. Due to COVID-19, her place of work needed help with feeding the residents. This was something DePaulo never imagined doing, however, she helped the company when they were in a time of need. With this, she also noted that hard work pays off and that people do notice the extra work employees do.”  Kate Sollers ’22

Communications collateral

Employees should update the logos used on institutional materials, including email signatures, letterhead, PowerPoint slides, etc.

Thiel College has used the shield and wordmark combination as the official institutional logo for more than a year. They are the only approved logo for academic co-curricular and institutional use. Additional athletic logo packages are also available.

Email signatures, brand resources, and a job request form are all available online. A Dropbox folder has been set up with instructions and the materials necessary to create new email signatures. Employees can find other Thiel College-branded resources including letterhead, logos and PowerPoint slides in the same folder.

Thiel College community members who need help with communications and marketing initiatives and collateral can now request those services with a job form. The request form is available on the communications and marketing webpage or linked directly below.

For more information, email the office.

Communications and Marketing update

Official style guide update for recognizing graduate students’ graduation year

The official Thiel College style for graduation years for graduate students is being updated to include the specific graduate degree an alumnus or alumna received.

Previously, master’s degree students were signified with a “G” followed by the student’s anticipated or actual graduation year. Moving forward graduate students who did not get an undergraduate degree from Thiel College will be identified as Tommy Tomcat M.S.’22. For students who receive both an undergraduate and graduate degree from the College will be identified as Tommy Tomcat ’21, M.S.’22. Please note, there is not a space between the period and apostrophe before the grad year. Also, the style is for an apostrophe not an open quote mark before the graduation year.
