GREENVILLE, Pa.—The renovation of the Daniel and Dorothy Spence Academic Center at Thiel College has been recognized as an outstanding design in the Interior Renovation category by the 2025 Educational Interiors Showcase.

The project transformed Thiel’s most heavily used academic building into a bright, welcoming and highly functional hub for students, faculty and visitors. Renovation highlights include the creation of a new entryway and a reimagined main lobby designed to enhance first impressions and navigation throughout the building.

Updated finishes, enhanced lighting and the strategic use of color, flooring and graphics create a more inviting atmosphere while clearly defining spaces and improving wayfinding. The project also included the development of Longiotti Commons on the first floor, along with new nursing department offices and simulation rooms on the lower level.

Funded in part by alumni donations from the Spence and Longiotti families, the renovation represents the first phase of a multiyear improvement plan for the academic center. Once characterized by dim lighting and an uninviting brutalist aesthetic, the building was re-envisioned to better support academic life, large campus events and daily student activity.

Despite the challenges of renovating an occupied building and working within existing structural limitations, the project successfully delivered a lighter, more student-centered environment. Since its completion, the space has been embraced by students, faculty and community members alike.

The renovation celebrates Thiel College’s alumni legacy, enhances the overall user experience and strengthens campus engagement, laying a strong foundation for future improvements while honoring the institution’s history.
