GREENVILLE, Pa.—The Thiel College Department of Media, Communications and Public Relations hosted virtual sessions for the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System’s 81st annual conference at the James Pedas Communication Center recently.

Normally, the conference is held live and in-person at New York City’s Hotel Pennsylvania each spring. Students from Thiel College’s radio station, WXTC, and members of its video broadcasting channel, TCTV, have participated in the event for the past seven years. Due to COVID, this year's conference was streamed in multiple sessions to conference attendees. During the conference, IBS hands out its prestigious Golden Mic Awards.

WXTC was nominated for three Golden Mic Awards:

“I'm proud of their hard work—to earn a finalist spot at IBS and to have worked together so well and professionally in pulling the conference off,” Thiel College Instructor of Communication and Managing Advisor of WXTC radio Peg Watts said.

The live stream event was hosted in the Stamm Lecture Hall and attended by approximately 40 people, including parents and guests. The entire event was held throughout the Pedas Center, which ensured that the limited number of attendees remained socially distant.

Watts said Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College Liz Frombgen, Ph.D., played an important role in making the event a success. Watts also mentioned the members of the College’s Live Events Club, who helped organize the event, which included a celebratory dinner following the awards announcement.

“We also want to thank Dean Frombgen and Academic Affairs, for sponsoring our celebration feast that followed the ceremony and for recognizing the students’ hard work and dedication,” Watts said.

WXTC-FM and TCTV are both housed in the $6.8 million James Pedas Communication Center, a collaborative learning community where students engage in film, TV, radio, news production and other multimedia-rich experiences that prepare them for today’s information society. The building’s features include sophisticated labs and studios, dynamic classrooms and learning spaces, the Office of Admission, and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design building certification.
