GREENVILLE, Pa.—Several Thiel College Environmental Safety Management students expanded their professional skills and career readiness by attending the Mid-Atlantic Safety and Health Alliance Conference on Oct. 30 in Cranberry, Pa.
The event was held about 20 minutes north of Pittsburgh and is one of the region’s key gatherings for workplace safety professionals and students pursuing careers in environmental health, occupational safety, and risk management.
During the conference, students networked with safety professionals representing manufacturing, construction, energy, logistics, and other industries across western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. They also visited vendor exhibits showcasing new safety technologies, compliance tools, training software, and personal protective equipment—resources commonly used by environmental safety managers and industrial hygienists.
The group reconnected with several Thiel environmental safety management alumni now working in the safety field, giving current students the opportunity to learn about career paths, job responsibilities and the transition from academic coursework to industry roles.
Conference programming included sessions on legal issues affecting the Environmental Safety Management profession, insurance considerations, and workers’ compensation. Several presenters shared personal accounts of workplace incidents involving themselves or family members, illustrating the long-term impact of injuries on employees, families and organizations.
Assistant Professor of Environmental Safety Management Hope Dropp said the event reinforced critical themes in the ESM curriculum, including hazard recognition, regulatory compliance, and the human impact of safety failures.
The experience provided students with relevant insights into real-world safety challenges while strengthening their professional networks and exposure to industry expectations—key components of Thiel College’s applied approach to Environmental Safety Management education.
