GREENVILLE, Pa.—National security and foreign policy expert Julia M. Santucci will discuss the complicated relationship between intelligence analysts and U.S. foreign policymakers at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
Santucci is a senior lecturer in intelligence studies and director of the Hesselbein Forum Leadership Program in International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. The conflict between intelligence and foreign policymaking has received national media attention due to the intelligence community’s assessment that the Russian government interfered in the 2016 presidential election.
“The timing of this presentation is perfect,” Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College Elizabeth Frombgen, Ph.D., said. “Our nation is dealing with allegations that a foreign power influenced our elections, and at the same time, Santucci will be on campus just days after the end of the most recent G20 summit.”
Santucci has over a decade of experience in national security and foreign policy positions. She has served in senior-level positions for the Secretary of State’s Office of Global Women’s Issues and as the Director for Egypt at the National Security Council. She worked for 10 years as a leadership analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency, where she provided written assessments and oral briefings to the President of the United States, members of his Cabinet and other senior officials to help inform their decision making around developments in the Middle East.
She has written on issues of international gender equality and human rights. She received her master’s degree in near eastern studies from the University of Arizona in 2004 and her bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Dayton in 2001.
