GREENVILLE, Pa.—Greenville High School will induct Thiel College wrestling coach Craig Thurber and alumnus Charles Semroc ’57 into the high school’s Athletic Hall of Fame later this month.
The pair are among the five inductees Greenville High School will add to its Athletic Hall of Fame prior to the Trojans football game against Sharpsville on Friday, August 30.
The pair were recently profiled in the Greenville Record-Argus.
Thurber graduated from Greenville High School in 1991. During his high school wrestling career, he collected 102 career wins, qualified three times for the state tournament, and finished as runner-up in 1990 and state champion in 1991. Additionally, Thurber was a two-way starter as a linebacker and running back for the 1990 Northwest Conference Champs. He is in his 22nd season as the Rod E. Wilt ’86 Head Coach for Thiel College Wrestling and is a faculty member in the Department of Health and Physical Education. Since taking over the Tomcat program in 2003, Thurber has led the Tomcats to 11 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships and has taken multiple wrestlers to the Division III National Championships, with several student-athletes earning All-America honors. Thurber has been named the PAC Coach of the Year nine times, and his teams have finished in the top 25 academically seven times. He and his wife, Kristin, have three children.
Semroc, who is being inducted posthumously, attended Thiel and was inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991 following a distinguished football career. Semroc, also known to former classmates as “The Rock,” graduated from Penn High in 1953 and co-captained the Greenville High School football team his senior year. Semroc was named to the All-Northwestern Pennsylvania team as a sophomore and earned second-team all-state honors as a senior
While at Thiel, Semroc was a four-time letterman for the football team as a two-way starter and linebacker, as well as co-captain during his senior season. Thiel College inducted him into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.
While at Thiel, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1957. Semroc worked for PPG Industries for 36 years as a research chemist. He was the Director of Automotive Topcoats Technology. In 1992, he was inducted into the PPG Technical Collegium to recognize his contributions to PPG’s success. Semroc retired from PPG as Director of Automotive Topcoat Coatings and Resins in 1993. Semroc was inducted into the Thiel College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.
