THIEL
TO REINSTATE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S GOLF PROGRAMS
GREENVILLE,
Pa. (May 25) -- Thiel College has announced its decision to reinstate
both the men's and women's golf programs this fall.
“After
a one year hiatus, we have had an opportunity to evaluate our decision
and create a plan to make these teams more competitive and more
satisfying to existing and potential student athletes,” said Vice
President for Student Life and interim athletic
director Roseanne
Gill-Jacobson. “Our
goal is to attract and keep full rosters on both the teams while
maintaining both academic and athletic success.”
One
key to the return of the golf program was the commitment of a local
practice and competition course. “There had been uncertainty
about the future of Greenville Country Club when it was announced
that it would be put up for sale. With the new owner making a long
term commitment to make the course available for the College’s
use, we have eliminated a big concern,” said Gill-Jacobson.
In
April, it was announced that Greenville natives and Thiel alumni
Howard and Robert Weyers would be purchasing the club. The Weyers
brothers have been long time friends and supporters of the College.
Scott
Hartle, the
College’s vice president for finance and Chief Financial Officer,
will serve as interim head coach for both teams while the search
for a permanent head coach is undertaken. “I’m excited
about our decision and look forward to building competitive rosters. The
decision is extremely important to our conference as well because
it gives us the critical mass to secure an automatic qualifier
for the regional tournament.”
Hartle
noted that anyone interested in finding out more about the Thiel
golf programs, especially high school athletes with a desire to compete
at the collegiate level, can contact him at 724-589-2102.
