The courses offered by the department include Chinese, ESL (English as a Second Language), French, German, Greek, Latin, and Spanish.

Chinese

CHIN 150/151 Intro to Chinese (6 C.H.)*

This course is designed to build basic communication and cultural skills in Mandarin Chinese.  Emphasis will be on speaking and listening, but students will also learn the essential reading and writing skills.  Student should complete this course with an ability to communicate at the novice level and the tools to continue effective learning in and outside the classroom.  This class will be student & learning centered, focused on training students through discussion, practice and performance in Mandarin Chinese.

CHIN 253 East Asian Culture & Civilization (3 C.H.)

This course is designed to increase understanding and build necessary skills in students who may be interacting with people from East Asia, in particular the cultures of modern China, Korea and Japan.  Because of the interactive and student centered nature of the class, it is also designed to include international students from these countries to provide opportunities for them to describe, compare and contrast their native cultures with other cultures.  This class is learning centered, and delivery is via. distance learning.

ESL

ESL 150 ESL Basic English I (3 C.H.)*
This course is designed to strengthen the language skills of incoming international students in the areas of speaking, reading and listening. As part of a year-long Intensive English as a Second Language Program, it is intended to prepare incoming international students for college-level academic work at Thiel.

ESL 151 ESL Composition I (3 C.H.)
Designed specifically for international students, this course deals with grammar, structure, and revision of English composition at the low-intermediate level, with special emphasis on paragraph writing. It is intended to prepare incoming international students for college-level academic work.

ESL 152 ESL Basic English II (3 C.H.)*
Designed for students who have passed ESL 150, this course will continue to strengthen their language skills in the areas of college-level speaking and listening. It is intended to enhance international students' performance in academic work at Thiel College. Its continued emphasis and coaching on speaking and listening skills is intended to "seal" those skills and prevent the linguistic breakdown common to students during their second semester of study abroad. ESL 153 ESL Composition II (3 C.H.)
Designed specifically for international students,who have passed ESL 151 with a grade of at least C minus, this course deals with essay writing at the high-intermediate level.  It is intended to strengthen the writing skills of international students in preparation for college-level academic work.

ESL 154 ESL Reading I (3 C.H.)
Reading I is designed to improve students' reading and vocabulary-building skills.  Students will practice the skills of skimming, scanning, reading for comprehension and critical thinking.  Students will demonstrate their understanding through speech and in writing.  There is a strong emphasis on discussion in this course.

ESL 155 Reading II (3 C.H.)
This course will focus on further developing reading skills, with increased emphasis on critical thinking.  As with Reading I, speaking and writing are important components of this course.   (P: ESL 154

NOTE:  Students who do not successfully complete fall ESL coursework must, if allowed to return to Thiel for the spring semester, complete, through independent study, fall semester ESL coursework while simultaneously taking and successfully completing spring ESL coursework.

French

FREN 103 Language Maintenance (1 C.H.)
One credit hour language maintenance courses are individually designed, laboratory-based experiences for the student who wishes to maintain language achievement either because proficiency has been achieved or because the student is off sequence and does not wish to forget material. Two hours per week lab work, grades are credit or no-credit, may be taken for a total of four hours with permission of the Department.

 

FREN 150/151 Introduction to French Communication (6 C.H.)*
Instruction in most basic elements of grammar, pronunciation, and intonation, for the purposes of speaking, of aural comprehension, of reading and writing. Language laboratory required. Not a major track course.

FREN 213 Intermediate I (3 C.H.)*
Grammar review and introduction of more advanced linguistic patterns. Reading and discussion in French of literary texts. Language laboratory required. ( P: FREN 151 or equivalent)

FREN 223 Intermediate II (3 C.H.)*
Continuation of FREN 213. (P: FREN 213 or equivalent)

FREN 253 Early French Culture and Civilization (3 C.H.)
French culture from the earliest times up to 1875. Taught in English.

FREN 263 Modern France: Its Culture (3 C.H.)
A study of the various cultural aspects of France and their influences on the rest of the world during the past one hundred years. Taught in English.

FREN 293 Individual Work (3 C.H.)
Students whose requirements in French cannot be met in regularly scheduled courses may, with the consent of the instructor and the head of the department, register for this course.

FREN 303 Individual Work (3 C.H.)
Continuation of FREN 293.

FREN 313 Composition and Conversation I (3 C.H.)

Extensive training in speaking and aural comprehension based on contemporary literature, periodicals, and civilization materials; practice in writing compositions and in-depth study of grammar. (P: FREN 223 or equivalent)

FREN 323 Composition and Conversation II (3 C.H.)
Continuation of FREN 313. (P: FREN 313 or equivalent)

FREN 333 Survey of French Literature and Civilization I (3 C.H.)
This course is designed to acquaint the student who is able to read French with extracts of the highlights of French literature from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Oral and written reports in French. May be taken concurrently with FREN 313.

FREN 343 Survey of French Literature and Civilization II (3 C.H.)
This course is designed to acquaint the student who is able to read French with extracts of the highlights of French literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. Oral and written reports in French. May be taken concurrently with FREN 323.

FREN 455 Cooperative Education (C.H. Variable)

FREN 483 Advanced Language for the Professions (3 C.H.)
The course is specifically designed to prepare the advanced language student for effective communication in her or his chosen field. Students will read a wide variety of periodical and journal articles as well as documents related to careers in business, the medical professions, social services, education, law enforcement, and international diplomacy. The scope of the professions is not necessarily limited to those listed above. (P: FREN 313 or permission of the instructor)

FREN 593 Independent Study (1-4 C.H.)
Student majors with a satisfactory quality-point average may, with the consent of the instructor and the head of the department, register for this course. Special work in French will be assigned on the basis of the individual needs and interests of the student.

GER 109 Language Maintenance (1 C.H.)

A beginning course designed for students with no previous instruction in German. Most basic elements of grammar, pronunciation, and intonation for the purpose of speaking, understanding, reading, and writing German. Language laboratory required.

GER 219 Intermediate I (3 C.H.)*
Systematic review of grammar, pronunciation, and intonation. Reading of simple texts by German authors. Language laboratory required. (P: GER 151 or equivalent)

GER 229 Intermediate II (3 C.H.)*
Continuation of GER 219 with more stress placed on the reading of texts of average difficulty. Language laboratory required. (P: GER 219 or equivalent)

GER 299 Individual Work (3 C.H.)
Students whose requirements in German cannot be met in regularly scheduled courses may, with the consent of the instructor and the head of the department, register for this course.

GER 319 Composition and Conversation I (3 C.H.)
Intensive practice in speaking and aural comprehension as well as practice in writing compositions based on contemporary audio, video and library materials. (P: GER 229 or equivalent)

GER 329 Composition and Conversation II (3 C.H.)
Continuation of GER 319. (P: GER 319 or equivalent)
