Welcome to the Communication Page

The Department of Communication Studies offers majors in Speech Communication and Business Communication and a minor in Speech Communication.

Speech communication is a broad-based major in which students take all their requirements in communication courses. Additionally, at least nine hours of communication electives must be taken to complete this major. Speech communication is a comprehensive degree designed to prepare students for graduate school or for a variety of positions in both the public and the private sector.

Business Communication is an interdisciplinary degree between the Communication and the Business Departments. This is a popular major for students who are interested in management, marketing, advertising or public relations.

The Communication Department offers electives in both print and broadcast media and our students have the opportunity to get hands-on experience. Students are encouraged to work on the school newspaper, with the radio station, the yearbook, and video projects. Enrollment in the brodcast media courses enable the students to participate in the departments television programming. It is recommended that students majoring in communication or business communication complete an internship before graduation.

In addition to the academic and hands-on experience, we also have two student organizations: Lambda Pi Eta and the Society for Collegiate Journalists.

Lambda Pi Eta is the communication honor society of the National Communication Association. Eligibility for membership is open only to Speech Communication and Business Communication majors and is based on the student's grade point average.

The Society for Collegiate Journalists (SCJ) was re-activated in the Spring of 1997. SCJ is open to both communication and non-communication majors. Membership is based on academic performance and is open to students who exemplify dedication to the campus media by submitting photographs or articles of high journalistic quality that demonstrate a well-researched, ethical style of writing.
