Tomcat Tank entrepreneurs make their pitch

Students in the Entrepreneurship Seminar class presented business pitch ideas to guest judges. Students participated in an activity called “Tomcat Tank” where they had 45 minutes to come up with a creative solution to a problem and effectively pitch that solution to judges. Judges for the event included former Entrepreneur of the Year award winner and Haller Enterprise Institute Advisory Board member Dale Deist as well as entrepreneurship educator Katie Parr, who is the program director at the eAcademy at LindenPointe in Hermitage.

“Coming up with a business plan pitch was easier than I thought it would be. At first it was a little bit stressful, but as the time went on I felt more comfortable with the idea. However, it was challenging to find prices because our idea was a fairly new idea that hasn't fully kicked off around the country. I found it interesting how other groups approached different slides.” Rachael Smith ’26

“I really enjoyed the business plan pitch presentation! It gave us real life examples, and showed us how much really goes into starting a business! I also really enjoyed the comments and questions from the panel of judges!” Casey Yacos ’25

“I have not done a business pitch before, so going into this project I was a bit worried about what I could do. I must say, however; I was very proud of the outcome of the pitch. I believe it helped me grow as an individual, not only by learning a new skill, but also improving my presentational skills. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity.” Lexi Brown ’26

“When we were tasked with creating a business to find a solution for a common problem that a lot of students' face, (time management issues) there were a lot of positives that came out of the project. Although time was a constraint the things I learned was to problem solve in a short amount of time for something that is a problem with majority of people like me. It resonated to me because it was almost like trying to find a solution for my past self that I have now overcome and made it easier to find a solution. As well as being a great experience for my future self to create something that is different and other people would benefit from. The pitch was one of my favorite parts because I could speak from experience about the problem we were faced with and heard great feedback from our guests or (the sharks in the activity).” Dillon Belknap ’25

“Working on the business plan pitch was both fun and challenging. It was interesting to come up with a solution that solves a real problem and think about how it could actually work in the real world. The toughest part was figuring out how to make the business profitable and convincing others why it’s a good investment. It also made me realize how important teamwork and clear communication are when pitching ideas. Overall, it was a memorable experience because it pushed me to think creatively and practically at the same time.” Yianni Panagiotopoulos ’25

Communications collateral

Employees should update the logos used on institutional materials, including email signatures, letterhead, PowerPoint slides, etc.

Thiel College has used the shield and wordmark combination as the official institutional logo for more than a year. They are the only approved logo for academic co-curricular and institutional use. Additional athletic logo packages are also available.

Email signatures, brand resources, and a job request form are all available online. A Dropbox folder has been set up with instructions and the materials necessary to create new email signatures. Employees can find other Thiel College-branded resources including letterhead, logos and PowerPoint slides in the same folder.

Thiel College community members who need help with communications and marketing initiatives and collateral can now request those services with a job form. The request form is available on the communications and marketing webpage or linked directly below.

For more information, email the office.

Just Because

Nominee: Jennifer Broderick, Ph.D.
Nominator: Sean Oros ’15

Comment:
“Many bio students speak fondly of Dr. Jenn Broderick, but I've also heard from several that they are at Thiel BECAUSE of her. Her commitment and dedication are absolutely felt across campus and especially by the students.”

Just Because

Nominee: Matthew Morgan, Ph.D.
Nominator: Sean Oros ’15
Comment:
“I've heard from many different students how much they enjoy Dr. Matt Morgan's classes, but one in particular told me that he assigns "meaningful" work and always asks the right questions to get students thinking in class. He is a valuable asset to our educational mission.”
