Four Thiel College students nominated for five Intercollegiate Broadcasting System awards

Four Thiel College students have been nominated for Intercollegiate Broadcasting System awards that will be handed out during the 83rd annual conference in New York City at the Sheraton Times Square from March 1-2.

The last week was a busy one on campus with The Learning Commons hosting an open house for students, faculty and staff and the entire community coming together for Academic Honors Convocation.

Five endowed chairs and positions were recognized during Friday’s Honors Convocation.

Mary Theresa Hall, Ph. D. was recognized as the James Pedas ’50 H ’89 Chair of Communication. Assistant Professor of Business Administration and Accounting and Haller Enterprise Institute co-director Steven Kandray was recognized as the Norman P. Mortensen H’81 Chair of Economics; Director of The Dietrich Honors Institute and Associate Professor of History Sheila Nowinski, Ph.D. was recognized as the Kenneth ’31 and Marianna Brown ’32 Dietrich Honors Institute Chair; Melissa Oakes ’03 was recognized as the Dr. David M. Miller’61 H’20 Chair of Accounting; and Craig Thurber was recognized as the Rod E. Wilt ’86 Head Coach for Thiel College Wrestling.

Maukonen shares her insights on life and the legal profession

Chelsea Maukonen ’14 was the featured speaker at the February 7 Ruth A. Miller Senior Business Seminar. She is a partner with the firm Chartwell Law in Fort Myers, Fla.

“After graduating in 2014 Chelsea, much to her parent’s chagrin, decided to not immediately go into the workforce with her accounting and business degree. Instead, she went back to school! Law school specifically.” George Tice ’24

Lessons Learned

Education students meet up with Alaskan alumnus online

Students in the Department of Education held an online meeting with Michael Robbins ’96 on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

Robbins is the superintendent of Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District in Ketchikan, Alaska. It is a PreK-12 school district, with nine schools, serving an estimated 2,200 students.

He gave the future teachers advice about classroom management, building teachers, and becoming successful, as he has been in his career in education.

His finshed the meeting with, “Anywhere you can do good for kids is good by me” and “I’m proud of you all and proud to say you are student teaching at Thiel College.”

Chocolate sale, Padrone’s event to support Egypt trip

The students, faculty, and community members traveling to Egypt this May have begun fundraising to offset some of the incidental costs of the trip. This promises to be an amazing trip with an itinerary that includes Cairo, the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx, the Step Pyramid, Aswan, Luxor, the Valley of the Kings, Alexandria and a three-day cruise down the Nile.

In addition to an upcoming event at Padrone’s on March 21, Daffin’s candy bars (milk chocolate, almond, peanut butter, caramel, pretzel bits, and crisp) as well as the large chocolate covered pretzels are available for $1 each. Anyone who would like to place an order, should contact Professor of Sociology, Department Chair and Travel Abroad Coordinator Cynthia L. Sutton, Ph.D. at ext. 2084.

Business and Communication Visit Day includes panels and events

Department of Media, Communication, and Public Relations invites the Thiel College community to celebrate our outstanding media students who are nominated for Intercollegiate Broadcasting System 2024 awards and to discuss students’ involvement with Thiel Media at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16 in the collaboration area of the James Pedas Communication Center.

The student leader panel to talk about how you can participate in Thiel media, ask questions about their past and present achievements, and simply cheer our students for their success. 

include the IBS award nominees and student media leaders and panel moderator WXTC Radio Manager and Chief Operator Jake Clark ’20.

Prospective communication students will also tour the state-of-the-art facilities, including the upgraded hardware and support systems of the television studio and the video podcast studio as well as the radio station.

The Department of Business Adminstration and Accounting are also hosting events, including a entrepreneur contest for attendees.
