Student News

Dan Bolena ’85 shares his Thiel story

Dan Bolena ’85 was the featured speaker at the April 20 Ruth A. Miller Senior Business Seminar.  Dan is the Americas Sales Coach with UiPath in Evans City, Pa.

“Dan Bolena is possibly one of the most openhearted and cool Thiel alumni that I have met.  He started off by having the whole room stand up and then have us scream “Good Evening Thiel College” to get our blood pumping and so that we wouldn’t be just sitting for so long.” Alrick Francis ’22

“Dan began by talking about his early childhood and his struggles with his family life. Most people when dealing with these issues tend not to grasp onto the entrepreneurial mindset, but Dan overcame and did whatever it took to further his education and professional life.” John Ganiear ’22

“Dan talked a great deal about his journey to Thiel, a few experiences at Thiel, and the aftermath of his graduation and what’s next for him in his career which I thought was very interesting since no other speaker has broken it down in that manner. He found Thiel because his father kept pushing him to go there and at first, he did get denied and had to take classes at Penn State New Kensington however, he was able to get into Thiel on his second attempt.” Dan Myers ’22

“When Dan finally made it to Thiel, he wanted to pursue a degree he was passionate about. Dan had been a long-life entrepreneur, as a young boy, he had his own paper route, sold garden seeds door to door, and sold Christmas cards. Dan decided he wanted to get a degree in business.” Emily Sears ’22

“He then went on to describe his Thiel career to us which entailed him joining a fraternity where he found lifelong friends that he is still close with today. It really hit home when he was describing his relationship with the people he met in college because I feel as if I am closer with my friends here than anybody I have ever met before.” Maddison Neely ’22

“He had always felt as he was a lifelong entrepreneur, even if that meant washing and waxing Professor Miller’s car for $40. Working in the cafeteria and getting fired over an apple pie, and then moving on to being an assistant to his accounting professor who gave him a chance. This led him to say to follow your passions but pay for the pie.” Madeline DePalma ’22

“After graduating Thiel Dan Bolena worked in retail at Gimbles, worked in sales with greeting cards, and worked other jobs before currently working as Americas Sales Coach with UiPath. Mr. Bolena enjoys his job because it gives him the opportunity to help others accomplish things they thought they couldn’t and to help those who consider themselves to be the underdog.” Adonis Scriven ’22

“Dan graduated from Thiel College in 1985 with majors in Business Administration and Economics.  He did not find his ‘why’ though. That would come later as he grew in his career from an entry-level starter in retail to being offered C-level position in telecommunications to eventually an executive coach for a software company. He found great fulfillment in coaching and building others up.” Owen Sa ’22

“Dan relayed to us the importance of finding your “why” in life. He taught us that it may take a long time, but it is vital to never stop searching for what you want to do and what brings you joy in life.” Abigail Cico ’22

“He mentioned that his daughters are one of his whys which then touched on how money is not the importance of everything, success is not only based on money. Your career is about being authentic and continuing to grow into yourself and finding who you are and what makes you passionate, make mistakes, learn, and grow.” Madeline DePalma ’22

“Dan spent the bulk of his career chasing an income that he thought he was expected to attain.  In the last 5-7 years, he’s found his “why” and it is leadership coaching.  He could do it all day long, unpaid and be perfectly happy.” Angela Sorg ’23

“The biggest takeaway I had from the speech was to write goals down. I will be writing my goals down in hopes that I can fulfill them afterwards and have that same realization that it works like Dan did.” Brycen Dorfmeister ’23

“His story was inspiring and different than others we have heard from. His was not about how to go out and get a job or how to do interviews, instead, his speech was about why we as individuals should be the best person, we can be for ourselves.” Brycen Dorfmeister ’23

“He referred to himself as an underdog, but instead of using this as an excuse or a crutch he used it for motivation and ended up finding his career and passion.” Abigail Cico ’22

“Dan’s motto which he graciously imprinted on pens for the entire class is “Veni Vidi Vici!” which translates to “I came, I saw, I conquered!” An exercise that I am sure to enjoy down the road, Dan had us use these pens to write our future selves a letter explaining where we want to be and how things might change in the meantime.” John Ganiear ’22

“Towards the end of Bolena’s presentation, he had us write down a note to our future self. He plans on sending these to us in 12 months. He noted that he does this same thing with his two daughters around Christmas time. Doing this exercise really got me thinking about what I want for myself in the coming year. We all have known the same thing for so long and now we begin our lives outside of school. It is an exciting time for all of us graduating. We have great things coming for us!” Kate Sollers ’22

“Dan’s presentation was incredibly unique in the sense that he made us go out of our comfort zone and be able to tap into our emotions all at the same time. He was a moving presenter and a strong-willed individual. His presentation is one for the books in my opinion when it comes to presenters in this class.” Maddison Neely ’22

“In conclusion, I really like Dan Bolena and I have connected with him on LinkedIn and will hopefully one day have him as a mentor.” Alrick Francis ’22

Communications collateral

Employees should update the logos used on institutional materials, including email signatures, letterhead, PowerPoint slides, etc.

Thiel College has used the shield and wordmark combination as the official institutional logo for more than a year. They are the only approved logo for academic co-curricular and institutional use. Additional athletic logo packages are also available.

Email signatures, brand resources, and a job request form are all available online. A Dropbox folder has been set up with instructions and the materials necessary to create new email signatures. Employees can find other Thiel College-branded resources including letterhead, logos and PowerPoint slides in the same folder.

Thiel College community members who need help with communications and marketing initiatives and collateral can now request those services with a job form. The request form is available on the communications and marketing webpage or linked directly below.
