College signs articulation agreement with recognized Pittsburgh law school

Students enrolled at Thiel College can earn their undergraduate and law degrees in just six years through a new agreement between Thiel College and Duquesne University School of Law signed recently.

Students, community celebrate seventh annual Dome Opener

The seventh annual Dome Opening celebration featured a variety of activities and food.

Disability Resource Center Minute

Director of the Disability Resource Center Tami Micsky discusses important issues regarding her office in the “Disability Resource Center Minute” monthly in T-Notes. If you have any questions, contact Micsky at ext. 2063.

In the November edition of the Disability Resource Minute, you read about equality, equity and barriers. Some barriers make it difficult for people with disabilities to function and to have access to educational opportunities. There are common types of barriers: attitudinal, communication, physical, policy, programmatic, social and transportation. The most common barriers are attitudinal – behavior, perception, assumption. Examples include:

Many of the difficulties that people with disabilities face are related to the social environment. We often consider disabilities as shortcomings, but by considering disabilities as differences, we further embrace diversity and all members of the Thiel Community. I challenge you to consider your attitudes about disability:

Student News

Students present at the Society for Neuroscience meeting

Five neuroscience students presented at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in San Diego in early November. Amanda Hautmann ’17 and Grant Fox ’18 gave their presentation on “Brain Awareness Week at Thiel College” during the Brain Awareness Campaign seminar. Audrey Rickard ’17 and Hautmann gave the presentation “The Ruler Test as a Preliminary Screening Tool for Concussions.” Korinna Sherman ’17 and Evan Youker ’19 both received a Greenville Neuromodulation Center award this summer and presented their research on “The Cognitive, Behavioral, and Neural Consequences of Adolescent Nicotine Exposure in Adult Long-Evans Rats.”

Superheroes and villains take over LHR

Students from classes in psychology and economics took over the Lutheran Heritage Room in the Howard Miller Student Center on Tuesday to participate in the Thiel College Comic-Con and Spiderman days. 

Students displayed posters and materials for a social psychology class project for Assistant Professor of Psychology Kristel Gallagher, Ph.D., as part of Spiderman Day, and students created and exhibited their own unique superheroes and villains for Assistant Professor of Business Administration and Accounting Karen Shaffer, Professor of Painting Sean McConnor and Assistant Professor of Psychology Shannon Deets, Ph.D., for Comic-Con.

Special Notes

Late night breakfast

The Office of Student life is preparing for the annual Late Night Breakfast for students. Volunteers are needed to help kick off finals week by cooking breakfast from 10 p.m. to midnight on Monday, Dec. 12. Volunteers should arrive at the TC Cafe at 9 p.m. Faculty and staff are needed as kitchen help, line workers, food runners, table cleaners, dishwashers, and trash collectors.

United Way Campaign update

The deadline to sign up to contribute to the United Way through payroll deduction for 2017 is Dec. 15. So far, $5,165 has been pledged, putting the campaign beyond the halfway point of its $10,000 goal. United Way forms can be submitted to Debbie Marosy in Human Resources.

Advent Lessons, Carols and Candlelight

David Johnson Memorial Chapel

Advent Lessons and Carols will feature the Thiel chamber singers, handbell choir and musicians and other leaders from the campus community. The Rev. Curtis Thompson, Ph.D., will be preaching at the service. Thompson and Michael Bray, D.M.A., both retiring this academic year, will be honored during the evening. A cookie reception will follow the service.
