Enjoy some of the most compelling parts from Commencement 2016. It was a day full of special memories for the 216 graduates and their friends and families. Professor of Economics and Business Administration and Norman P. Mortensen Chair of Economics David Miller ’61 delivered the Commencement address and dedicated it to the graduates. Honorary degrees were awarded to LaVonne C. Johnson, Edward A. Bartko ’72 and Rev. Dr. David P. Gleason. Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science and Department Chair Andrew Grover; Lecturer of Mathematics Max E. Shellenbarger; and Professor of Political Science Robert Wells, Ph.D., were granted emeriti faculty status during the exercises.

A combination of Thiel College staff and contracted firms will be working on a full slate of summer projects. The maintenance department reminds employees to avoid construction sites and areas where work is ongoing.
A few of the larger summer projects include:

Psychology majors Amanda Hautmann ’17, Mandy Slupek ’17 and Nicole Johnston ’16 presented their research on “What Type of Bias is Present in Required Readings at Thiel College?” at The Laurel Highlands Undergraduate Psychology Research Conference at the University of Pittsburgh Greensburg in late April.
Their research presentation was the culmination of a semester-long independent study mentored by Assistant Professor of Neuroscience and Department Chair Greg Butcher, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor of Psychology Kristel Gallagher, Ph.D.
Tomcat Tributes recognize the teamwork Thiel College employees exhibit each day. Employees nominate co-workers for recognition in four categories (Random Act of Kindness, Going the Extra Mile, Had a Great Idea, Just Because).
Note of Gratitude
I wish to thank the Thiel community for the outpouring of kind words and good wishes for my retirement. Also, I was truly surprised by the team effort—including a bit of “breaking and entering” on the part of Barbara Long-Cooper ’98—that has added a pair of Thiel Tomcat Crocs to my collection! Further, I expect that I will be using my hat-chucking cubbie in the campus store every time that I am on campus, and I encourage others to make use of it and try to beat my score.
For the past 32 years, I have been pleased to be a member of the Thiel family. Although I won’t be on campus as regularly in the future, you may trust that I will keep my Thiel family in mind wherever I go.

Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Science
