Young alumni give seminar class career insights

Nick Travaglianti ’11, Alyssa Chine ’13 and Joel Bussard ’09 spoke to the senior business seminar class of Prof. David Miller, M.B.A. ’61 on March 2. The three young alumni discussed many topics that resonated with the students who will be joining the workforce soon.

“Alyssa Chine holds a management accounting position within The NRP Group. She has her own 18-property portfolio. She gave us pointers [for] what to do what starting a new job. She said, ‘make sure you take notes, do not ask the same question more than once and perfect the role even if it is tedious work.’ Alyssa made me realize that you have to work for what you want and that you must make the opportunities for yourself. I agree with Alyssa when saying time management is important for being successful.” – Carlee Jones ’16

“The biggest point that Joel brought up, in my opinion, is to read the newspaper and be informed about the real world. I feel Thiel gives us a great opportunity to do this. The broad-based knowledge we learn here gives us the advantage of being able to adapt to many different situations and conversations.” – Sam Passafiume ’16

“The three speakers discussed how important and useful a liberal arts education such as [the one we get] from Thiel can truly be. Being able to speak with knowledge on a broad range of topics is something that will be very valuable in our future endeavors. It just goes to show that skills from a liberal arts education carry on. Their presentations also made us aware how big of a resource Thiel really is to us. There are many staff and faculty members who work very hard in an attempt to make us successful people after graduation.” – Trent Smith ’16

“Finally, Nick closed out the presentation with many great lessons he learned throughout his young career. One lesson that I found extremely useful was that you must manage your personal brand and keep your social media clean. He also stressed how important networking is, and we should spend most of our time networking while looking for jobs. It was very interesting to hear the perspective from younger Thiel graduates who have just recently entered the business world. They taught the class many new lessons, and also stressed some of the lessons the older generation taught us.” – Jeffery Jenkins ’16

“Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed listening and conversing with Nick, Joel and Alyssa because it reassured me that the ‘real world’ is challenging but we are all very capable of doing great things.” – Kelsey Schneider ’16

“Each of the associates gave great advice for soon-to-be graduates and reminded us that we cannot change yesterday, but can only look forward to tomorrow. I was reminded again how I will be benefiting from my education as well as how wonderful my professors are.” – Dawn Pastorius ’16
