Members of the Department of Psychology faculty discuss how the department’s cognitive, counseling, and social tracks can open career and professional studies options for students.

Director of the Disability Resource Center Tami Micsky, M.S.S.A., L.S.W., C.T., will discuss important issues regarding her office in the “Disability Resource Center Minute” in this space in the first T-Notes of each month during the academic year. If you have any questions, contact Micsky at ext. 2063.
This month, she discusses concussions.
As you can see from the above chart, the Disability Resource Center (DRC) assists students with more than just long-term disabilities. The DRC can also aid with short-term disabilities such as concussions. In accordance with NCAA guidelines, the College has adopted a “Return to Learn” policy. This has led to an increase in the number of students receiving support through the DRC.
A concussion is a form of traumatic brain injury and can have symptoms that impact a student’s ability to manage daily activities. Concussions affect one’s ability to think, remember and concentrate—clearly affecting a student’s ability to achieve in the classroom. A student may suffer headaches, sensitivity to light and sound, blurry vision, or balance problems. If a student requires accommodations for concussion symptoms, relevant documentation is reviewed and an individualized accommodation plan is created. A student may need note-taking assistance, extended time for testing or assignments, reduced computer use, audio textbooks, or other modifications. DRC will provide the student with an accommodation letter to verify the types of modifications needed.

The campus community came together with Jack ’74 and Patti Leipheimer and members of the Leipheimer family on Dec. 22 to celebrate Jack ’74 and Patti Day.
The couple retired at the end of 2015. Jack will continue to work part-time as a special assistant to President Troy D. VanAken, Ph.D., for athletics.
