Two Tomcat Marching Pride members selected for prestigious band festival

Thiel College students Amanda Hautmann ’17 and Katherine Orczeck ’18 will participate in the 69th Annual Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Band Festival from March 4-6, 2016 at Elizabethtown College.

Students, staff and friends celebrate Dome Opener

The sixth annual dome opening was Friday, Dec. 4. Inflatables, a climbing wall, a paintball style game and lots of food kicked off the opening of the Rissell-Schreyer Dome. The dome covers the football field from December to April, creating practice and event space for athletics and the community.

Thiel College tradition opens Christmas season

The 63rd annual Thiel College Christmas Festival is a tradition in the community and was held Dec. 6. The Thiel Choir, Handbell Ringers and Chamber Singers performed at this year's event, "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear."

Strategic Management class makes presentation to community foundation

On Dec. 4, the Strategic Management class of Professor Angelo Giannini, M.B.A., made a presentation to the Northern Mercer County Community Foundation. The Community Foundation asked the class to develop a plan for a recreational center for Northern Mercer County.

The class was structured into four teams with a project manager working with the Community Foundation and the consulting firm Strategic Solutions. The project manager was Nico Russo ’16. He coordinated the four teams, initiated and maintained timelines, acted as a liaison between the Community Foundation and Strategic Solutions, and summarized the final strategic plan. 

Sam Passafiume ’16 directed the data collection/community focus group. The group made and used a questionnaire that got over 500 responses. Dave Devivo ’16, Carlee Jones ’16, Shawn McGowan ’16, Evan Sokira ’16, Raffaele Aversa ’16 and Russell Madden ’15 composed the team.

Dylan Stevens ’16 led the best practice/secondary data team. It examined what other communities are doing in this area. They gathered and summarized existing secondary data. The team consisted of Ryan Brumbaugh ’17, Joshua Doody ’16, Jay Joseph ’17, Richard Smallwood ’15, Colin Murphy ’16, Keith Stover ’16 and Trey Vaughn ’16.

Jeff Jenkins ’16 headed up the demographic/day care team. This group broke down the population of northern Mercer County and determined if the needs of the community included a recreation center with a day care facility. The team comprised Alex Casile ’16, Megan Ely ’16, Taylor Ketler ’16, Alex McCann ’16, Sam Raymond ’16 and Charles Tindall ’15.

Jaden Nozicka ’16 managed the pro forma financial plan team. It developed financial reports relating to an income statement, balance sheet and cash budget for a three-year period. The team included Tiffany Rohm ’17, Alex Ciepiela ’15, Stephanie Felix ’16, Kristi Guritza ’16, Ashley Baer ’16 and Adam Matthews ’16.

Tips for staying healthy

The holidays can be a hectic time, but Highmark BCBS has strategies and resources to stay healthy during the holiday hustle and bustle.

DocuCenter holiday hours

The DocuCenter's schedule will change for Christmas break. The DocuCenter will close at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22. It will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 23.

The DocuCenter is closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 4.

From Dec. 28-30, DocuCenter staff will be checking messages and emails twice daily in case of unexpected needs.

IT maintenance schedule

Information Technology will be performing maintenance on servers starting at 6 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 17. This maintenance consists of installing patches on all the servers. This requires the servers to be rebooted. Server outages should be less than 10 minutes each and all patching will be complete by 8 a.m.

From noon to 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, Thiel College's Moodle hosting partner, eThink, is upgrading Moodle. Moodle will not be available during this upgrade window.

At 8 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, telephone circuits will be switched to a new carrier. This will result in an outage for all telephone calls coming into or leaving campus via the ShoreTel phone system. Service should be restored by 10 a.m.

‘Gold, God, and Glory’ Art Opening

Kyle Marini ’18 will display a series of paintings and ceramics that criticize the effects of the Spanish conquest of Latin America. His show “God, Gold, and Glory” will be on display from Dec. 12 to March 12, 2016.
