
Last week started with James M. Parker, M.S., Ph.D., J.D. ’64—an attorney concentrating in food and drug law—being named the 2015 Thiel College Haller Enterprise Institute Entrepreneur of the Year on Nov. 4. On Friday, an honorary Doctor of Laws degree was conferred on Dr. Harvey Childs, M.A. H'15 during the 2015 Academic Honors Convocation and events continued through Sunday for Family Weekend. Chair of the Department of Education Doug Hazlett, Ph.D.; Assistant Professor of Education and Director of Teacher Education Nancy Castor, M.Ed.; and adjunct Professor Matt Dieter, M.Ed., presented at the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators state conference in Harrisburg on Oct. 29. The group's presentation, "A Model Field Experience Course Hosted and Taught by Local School Principals," explained how other educators could replicate their collaborative model.
Dieter is also an elementary principal in the Greenville Area School District.
Benefits renewal meetings for full-time employees to hear about the 2016 plans are in the Sawhill-Georgian Room from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 18. Spouses are welcome.

Full-time employees will receive a 2016 open enrollment selection form that contains his or her current benefits information and options to make selections for 2016. The 2016 selection form (along with any change forms) must be completed and returned to Human Resources by Nov. 25. All benefit eligible employees are required to complete and return the 2016 benefits selection form.
To schedule a meeting, contact Kris Whaling at ext. 2150 with your name, session time and, if married, whether your spouse will attend. Also, if you are unable to attend a session, contact Kris, and she will send an open enrollment selection form by email or intercampus mail.
Anyone interested in viewing supplemental insurance benefits should go to the Human Resources office to receive an information packet. A private meeting with an Aflac representative can be arranged.

Pennsylvania State Education Association UniServ representative Corry Schachern, (seated on right) recently addressed the freshmen Foundations of Education class of Chair of the Department of Education and Professor Doug Hazlett, Ph.D. Schachern addressed issues students will be involved with professionally once they enter the workforce as a teacher, including salary, contracts, legal rights and responsibilities, tenure, dismissal, certification, and professional standards.
Thiel College education majors Kathleen Kent '15, Elliott Beach '15 and Dan Nolte '12, along with Tanner Liptrap '16 and Madison Mele '17, organized and presented a study forum at Greenville High School on Oct. 28.
The student-teachers offered tips to high school students for studying English, history, math and science.

On Oct. 9, 18 Thiel College accounting and finance majors attended the 19th annual Accounting and Finance Student/Practitioner Day sponsored by the Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University. Students participated in informative presentations and networked with accounting professionals from a wide variety of areas, including public accounting, forensic accounting, banking, government and industry. Representatives from accounting firms and companies of all sizes also attended.
Students attended numerous breakout sessions regarding possible accounting career paths. Informational sessions also were held on the various professional accounting certifications and related examinations. A networking event provided students the opportunity to interact one-on-one with the professionals in attendance. The students were especially enthusiastic about the keynote presentation, “Smart Communication” by Tim West, C.P.A., Ph.D., of Northern Illinois University.

Makeup Flu Shots
For any employees who were unable to receive a flu vaccination on campus, alternate days and times are available at the UPMC Urgent Care facility located on North Hermitage Road in Hermitage. Shots are available through Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon or 1-7 p.m. Employees must have their Thiel College ID in order to receive the vaccine for free.

Information Technology will be performing maintenance on the servers starting at 6 a.m. Thursday. Patches will be installed on all the servers. This requires the servers to be rebooted. Outages for each server should be less than 10 minutes and all patching will be completed by 8 a.m.
Also, on Monday, Dec. 21 from noon to 4 p.m. Thiel College's Moodle hosting partner, eThink, will upgrade the Moodle instance to version 2.9.1. The upgrade should repair a few minor bugs. Moodle will not be available during this upgrade window.

Northern Mercer Recreational Study
The Community Foundation of Western PA and Eastern Ohio has agreed to fund a research and planning study that would analyze the feasibility of enhancing a community recreation complex in the area. Emerson A. Baughman, Agnes F. Baughman, and David E. Baughman Community Foundation grants are available to the Northern Mercer County Community Foundation to help support the local community. One of the areas of interest is community recreation. Help the foundation determine what the recreational needs are for the community by participating in a short survey. A Thiel College strategic management class is helping conduct the research.
