Psychology professor studying dance’s effect on the brain

Thiel College Assistant Professor of Psychology Shannon Deets, Ph.D., is researching the effect dance that incorporates authentic movement has on the brain. The research is part of the first set of projects taking place this summer through the new Greenville Neuromodulation Center (GNC) Faculty/Student Research Institute.

Inaugural Thiel College camp puts high school students in touch with high tech media

Thiel College announces its inaugural summer media camp for high school students is July 13-17. Camp attendees will work with Thiel College's high-definition television equipment and editing software in the new, state-of-the-art James Pedas Communication Center to produce television and radio public service announcements.

Thiel College aids alumni's mission trip

Stephanie Voland, M.Div., '08 and her daughters, Charlotte and Gabrielle, and Thiel College President Troy D. VanAken, Ph.D.

Thiel College presented a check for about $1,100 to Stephanie and her husband, Phillip, M.A., '07, for their missionary service through The Evangelical Covenant Church in Hamburg, Germany. The money was raised through fundraising efforts by several groups on campus.

The Volands will be working on evangelism, discipleship and church planting while in Germany. 

Getting ready for the Class of 2019

Bob Schmoll, M.B.A., vice president for finance and management, addresses students during Wednesday's accepted student registration day.

Forty-two students attended the day, signed up for fall courses and got their Thiel ID card and e-mail address.

Thiel College students experiencing the world

You can keep up with rising junior Amanda Hautmann during her trip to Ireland, Scotland, Wales, London, and Barcelona. The Crofton, Md. resident has been in Europe since May and is posting photos and entries on her blog “Time to go on an adventure!

Amanda is not the only student studying abroad. Twenty-one Thiel students made a trip to Paris and London, and Professor of Sociology Cynthia Sutton, Ph.D., in May led a trip to Italy that included six Thiel students along with Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Chemistry and Chemistry Department Chair Anna Reinsel, Ph.D. '06 and Associate Professor of Neuroscience and Neuroscience Department Chair Greg Butcher, Ph.D. Several more intrepid souls are off to international locales flying solo. Ivey Shorts, of Saegertown, Pa., and Katie Allgeier, of Erie, Pa., are traveling internationally this summer due to Thiel College’s connection to the prestigious Vira I. Heinz  Scholarships for Women in Global Leadership. Shorts, a rising senior who is studying psychology and philosophy, is in India. Read her blog "My Life Began in India" to learn about her experiences. She was awarded a $5,500 scholarship to help pay for the trip. Allegeier, a rising senior who is studying English writing and English literature, is taking a five-week course in Galway, Ireland. She was given a $5,000 scholarship to make the trip.

Assistant Professor of Biology and Biology Department Chair Sarah Swerdlow, Ph.D., and her husband celebrated the recent birth of a baby boy, Logan. Both mom and baby are doing great.

2015 Tour of Mercer County Bike Ride
Saturday at 7 a.m.
Buhl Farm Park

The bike ride is a fundraiser for the Mercer County Trails Association and Buhl Farm Park. All rides begin and end in Buhl Farm Park. There are 15, 35, 65 and 100 mile rides.

Greenville Area Community Theater is performing "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" July 16-18 and July 23-25.

Kiwanis Annual Chicken BBQ
July 15
Hempfield Station One Pavillion, Sixth Avenue, Greenville

Tickets are $8. Meal includes half a chicken, baked potato, applesauce, roll and a beverage. Proceeds benefit Kiwanis club service projects. Contact Mario Marini at ext. 2022 by July 13 to purchase tickets or to arrange delivery. The Kiwanis Dining Card, good through Dec. 31, 2015, is still available and can be purchased at half price for $12.50.

Beautiful Beasts Art Show

Sans MOCO Gallery

Art work by Amanda Cooney will be on display through July 17. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Twenty-five percent of proceeds from print sales will be donated to the World Wildlife Fund and Ocean Conservancy.
