Pitt doctor to discuss patient responsibility in healthcare

UPMC Horizon, Thiel College, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and St. Paul’s are presenting the Community Medical Ethics Project March 19 at Thiel College. The internationally respected Dr. Loren H. Roth will be the featured presenter at the event. His topic is “Shared Decision-Making: The Patient’s Role in Health Care Delivery.”

Two sessions with identical content will be available: 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Each session will be held in the Lutheran Heritage Room, located in the Howard Miller Student Center.

Dr. Roth is a distinguished service professor of psychiatry, health policy and management and clinical translation science at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He will discuss the concept of shared medical decision making and how it can be achieved. Patients and professionals both face the realities of healthcare reform, including the dramatically increasing out-of-pocket costs for patients. Will future shared healthcare dialogues meaningfully address the issue of cost? Each presentation will have question-and-answer time with the audience participation.

Both sessions with Dr. Roth are free and open to the public. Continuing medical education credits will be available for health care professionals.

The mission of the Community Medical Ethics project is to help people in the community better understand medical ethics issues, so they can make better decisions involving their healthcare.

Bruno Mars reportedly views Thiel lipdub; project came together quickly

Nearly 2,000 viewers have watched the Thiel College "Uptown Funk" lip dub, which was recorded in one evening at the James Pedas Communication Center. One of those might even be Bruno Mars, Pedas Center Production Engineer Mike McElroy said.

"A group of students had the idea of making a lip dub video and they even knew exactly which song to use. But they also knew that they weren’t going to get this video done on their own," McElroy said. "They talked to Than Oo in Student Activities to get the ball rolling, and he contacted me to record it."

Costumed groups of students were placed throughout the Pedas Center. Filming started around 5 p.m. March 2 and after four takes was complete. Editing was completed March 3 and the final video was officially released March 4.

"The final product shows how much fun a video can be when students, faculty, and staff collaborate. I’m told even Bruno Mars has watched, and enjoyed the video," McElroy said.

Student News

Advertising class getting real world experience

As part of Professor Karen Shaffer's advertising course, students are getting real-world experience. Students are working with eight local businesses. Each is a member of the Greenville area Chamber of Commerce. Student teams are collaborating with each business owner to create an advertising improvement program regarding their print advertising, social media and market research strategies.

The local business owners expressed their delight at how professional, prepared and insightful they found their student teams to be.

"Had (Professor Shaffer) not told me this was the inaugural project of what she hopes to continue for years, I never would have known. It was well organized and well presented," said David Schepner, a real estate agent with the Conneaut Lake office of Coldwell Banker Bainbridge Kaufman Real Estate. "The students were remarkably astute and insightful."

Schepner said he cannot wait to see the finished product.

The real-life advertising project kick off-meeting pictured above created some synergies with Professor Angelo Giannini's operations management class, which is also working on a real-life semester-long project with a local growing business. Both classes will present their research and suggestions near the end of spring term. Shaffer said she hopes their team projects may also produce internship opportunities in the future. This collaboration with local business creates meaningful programs for the business, goodwill for the college and a needed, real-life canvas for students to practice the art and science of business.

Shaffer joined Thiel College as an Assistant Professor of Business Administration and Accouning in fall 2014. She holds an M.B.A. from Clarion University of Pennsylvnia.
