On Wednesday, March 19, recent graduates, Alyssa Chine '13 and Nick Travaglianti '11, dined with and spoke to the members of the senior business seminar. Some thoughts from the students include:
"They gave great advice on our interviews. They said we should ask questions and bring in notes on the company from our research. Being punctual, confident, dressing conservatively and following up are also important. Other speakers gave similar advice, but I had not heard such an emphasis about writing notes and questions down beforehand to use in the interview. I feel like this would really help me feel more prepared and less nervous in an interview. I really enjoyed their speeches because they are close to our age and know what the job market it like for graduates right now."
Sarah Jefferson
"One quote that they said to me that I will always remember is to "Always follow up." I think this is important because it shows how much you care about the job and it shows that you are adamant about being hired. Alyssa also told us to "Be responsive to your co-workers" and I thought this was an important quote as well."
Jadon Holloman
"Both Alyssa and Nick stressed the importance of networking and how it’s the key factor to finding a job. Both Nick and Alyssa found their jobs because of networking. Talk to as many people as you can and get your name out there because you never know who might be able to get you a job. They also both stressed the importance of doing well in interviews and that it is important to be sharp and confident."
Jared Hoffacker
"One interesting thing I learned is that moving laterally within a company is an important thing. Most people only look forward to promotions, but having a wide skill set makes one more marketable and the chances of getting promoted increase with more experience. I learned a great deal from Alyssa and Nick, and I was happy they came to share their story because I will be in their position following graduation."
Hillary Hambleton
"During their presentation, the two recent graduates gave some good tips. Overall Nick and Alyssa’s presentation was an interesting one about two interesting stories which gave us great lessons to know for our careers and for our lives."
Jay Engler
"I asked Alyssa how to conceal my nervousness in the interview. She told me that everyone is nervous in an interview but the most important thing is to be confident and honest."
Yujin Kim
"I asked what the best part about starting their careers was. Alyssa said that she felt accomplished once she received her job. All of the har work she put in at college was paying off. She also mentioned that is it very exciting when you can afford your own condo and have an income of your own! Nick also stated that it was a feeling of accomplishment and a sigh of relief when he received his job. He finally felt like he has something to show after all the years of school."

There are still several opportunities to join the small group trainings for MAP-Works this semester. The trainings are meant to provide faculty with hands-on training in the fundamentals of using MAP-Works. The aim of these sessions is to allow MAP-Works users to become comfortable and confident with the system before full implementation begins in Fall 2014. Faculty will also learn the ways in which they will be expected to use MAP-Works with their academic advisees. Please email Jenni Griffin with which session you will be attending.
