Thiel College welcomes healthcare leader and UPMC executive back to Board of Trustees

GREENVILLE, Pa.—Thiel College, a leading independent college in western Pennsylvania, announces that Joel P. Yuhas has rejoined its Board of Trustees.

“We’re excited that Joel Yuhas has rejoined the Board of Trustees. His background and experience will bring additional insights and perspectives as we deepen our partnerships with healthcare providers,” Thiel College President Susan Traverso, Ph.D. said. Thiel offers undergraduate programs in the health sciences and graduate programs in physician assistant studies and speech-language pathology.

He previously served on the board from 2007-2009.

Yuhas was appointed executive vice president, UPMC, and president of the system’s Health Services Division in March 2023. In this role, Yuhas is responsible for the direct oversight of 42 academic, community and specialty hospitals across the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York. Yuhas had worked in leadership roles at UPMC for eight years until 2014. He was named senior vice president for UPMC International and president, UPMC Ireland, after having served as president of UPMC Horizon and Northwest Hospitals.

Yuhas has more than 25 years of healthcare leadership experience, including CEO positions within major hospital systems and experience in both community and academic hospitals.

Yuhas received his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Cleveland State University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology in 1993 and his Master of Healthcare Administration in 1996. He has been an active Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives since 1995.

Yuhas is one of four professionals recently elected to Thiel’s board. Joining Yuhas are John Barr ’70, Paul Runge ’70 and Joseph Scarpitti ’80. The Board of Trustees comprises 33 men and women who bring diverse life, higher education and professional experience to their roles. The Trustees are responsible for the oversight of Thiel College. The Board adopts rules, regulations and policies governing Thiel College and has authority over curricular development, use of property, development of facilities and fiscal and human resources management. The Board of Trustees meets formally three times a year on campus.
