GREENVILLE, Pa.—Thiel College received a record-setting 456 donations in 24 hours on the way to raising nearly $200,000 for The Thiel Fund with its one-day online fundraising campaign Thursday, Feb. 21.
Over the last four years, Match Day has maintained its positive momentum, setting marks for participation and/or money raised. The College asked alumni, community members and friends of the College to make contributions on Feb. 21. The campaign’s theme, “Take the Plunge” was lived out when a video of Director of The Thiel Fund Mark Batt ’87 jumping into the icy waters of Pymatuning Lake was released to the public once the donor goal of 250 was met. The event raised $189,865 and has raised more than $750,000 the last five years.
Match Day also featured affinity group challenge with 252 donations made from representatives and members of Greek organizations. Sorority Alpha Xi Delta and fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon, which recently celebrated its 70th year on campus, were the Greeks with the highest participation. A special fundraising challenge was dedicated to celebrating the upcoming 80th birthday of Professor David Miller ’61. Miller is in his 56th year of teaching at Thiel College. He is the longest-tenured professor in the College’s 153-year history. The campaign also included a record-number of 79 first-time donors and 114 members of the campus community.
“Match Day is an exciting time for the Office of College Advancement and the whole College community. We are thankful to the alumni and friends of the College who step up annually and answer the call,” Vice President of College Advancement Roberta Leonard said. “Whether it is as students, alumni or friends, those associated with the College feel like the institution is a special place and that is reflected in the record-setting number of donors. We have never had a day like this in school history where more than 400 donations were made in less than 24 hours. By giving to the College, our supporters are guaranteeing that another generation will find an open community that connects students to the resources they need to become successful in life.”
Gifts to The Thiel Fund go exclusively to the areas of greatest need of the College, funding need-based scholarships, academic programming, athletics, and campus improvements.
