GREENVILLE, Pa.—The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recently released updated plans for proposed improvements to routes 18 and 58 near campus.

“We applaud the state’s significant investment in Greenville and Mercer County to improve vehicle flow and pedestrian safety. This project is being led by PennDOT. We appreciate the collaborative efforts of the department to address critical infrastructure needs in our community,” Thiel College President Susan Traverso, Ph.D. said. “The safety and well-being of our campus community members as well as anyone who travels through those intersections are of paramount importance to us, and we believe that the improvements brought about by this state-funded project will contribute to a safer and more efficient environment for everyone.”

According to PennDOT, the final design and right-of-way should be complete in February and construction could begin this year.

The improvements would involve three intersections, including realignments at Route 18 and Route 58, Route 18 and Packard Avenue and Route 58 and Packard Avenue. Additional improvements include new and upgraded sidewalks, curb ramps and driveway entrances. PennDOT has also been working with the state’s The Historic Preservation Office since part of the project will involve a small portion of Brother Martin’s Walk, the historic tree-lined sidewalk that has been a campus fixture since 1874.

The proposal has been updated to include improvements to Thiel College's campus, as well as the addition of a cul-de-sac near the intersection of College Avenue and Packard Avenue Extension.

The project is being funded predominantly with state and federal funds.
