GREENVILLE, Pa.—Thiel College faculty members recently completed the first phases of the fourth annual Dr. Edwin Hodge Jr. Institute for Teaching and Learning for summer 2016.

Funded by the Emma Clyde Hodge Memorial Fund, the Hodge Institute is an intensive, cross-disciplinary faculty development workshop that takes place each summer.

During these workshops, faculty members assess student learning outcomes for the year and plan for improvements in the year ahead.

The Hodge Core Literacy Assessments Workshop (May 11-13) evaluated key elements of Thiel’s core curriculum. The Hodge College Writing Institute (May 16-17) finalized a new introductory writing course.  In mid-August, faculty members from the English; History; Media, Communication and Public Relations; and Performing Arts departments will evaluate and revise the College’s Presentational Literacy course.

Overall, the Hodge Institute provides the Thiel faculty the time, space and collaborative engagement that ensures excellence, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College Lynn Franken, Ph.D., said.

“Thanks to the generosity of the Hodge family, the Hodge Institute for Teaching and Learning has become the centerpiece of interdisciplinary faculty development at Thiel College,” Franken said. “The impact of the work we do every summer is felt directly in the classroom and in the knowledge and skills we are able to share with our students.”
