GREENVILLE, Pa.—Thiel College President Susan Traverso, Ph.D., members of the Board of Trustees and faculty members will break ground on a new science connector facility at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1.

The event is a part of the College’s sesquicentennial Homecoming 2016 celebration and will be followed by a reception in The James Pedas Communication Center.

The $4.5 million project is anticipated to add 7,850 square feet of academic space. The consolidated science education areas will create a more efficient and student-friendly center. This state-of-the-art complex will include four enhanced labs that will enable more robust faculty and student research projects. Open collaborative areas on both floors of the atrium are linked to enhanced laboratory spaces dedicated to histology, environmental science, data analytics, and faculty and student research.

“Breaking ground on this facility during our sesquicentennial Homecoming celebration is fitting,” interim Vice President for College Advancement Roberta Leonard said. “As we remember 150 years of providing a comprehensive liberal arts education, we look forward to the future with an addition that will benefit the academic culture of the whole campus.”

The structure will connect the Rhodehouse Memorial Science Hall and the Academic Center at their eastern ends.

“The science connector is a dream come true for Thiel College,” said Lynn Franken, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. “From the very first day of planning, our wish was to make science visible by revealing and exploring its essential links with teaching and learning across the disciplines of the College. This new facility will inspire and enable connections of many kinds: faculty and student research collaborations; science, arts, and humanities partnerships; and campus and community alliances.”

Throughout her inaugural year, Traverso will advance her commitment to student success. The Science Connector and the two newly-renovated lab spaces in the Academic Center represent investments in the Thiel College mission to provide the best learning environment for its students.

Homecoming 2016 will also include a Sesquicentennial Gala at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30. The gala celebrates 150 years of Thiel College history and includes a silent auction benefitting The Thiel Fund. The annual Homecoming parade will commence at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1 as the Thiel Tomcat Marching Pride and community partners make their way along Greenville’s Main Street to campus. This will be followed by the Homecoming football game at 3 p.m. as the Thiel College Tomcats play Washington & Jefferson College at Alumni Stadium.
