GREENVILLE, Pa.—The 50-voice Thiel Choir is performing three Palm Sunday weekend concerts at two churches in Ohio and one closer to home in Greenville, Pa.
The choir performs at St. Columba Cathedral, 159 W. Rayen, Youngstown, Ohio at 7 p.m. March 27. They will follow that up with a performance at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 3295 S. Union, Alliance, Ohio at 7 p.m. March 28. The weekend culminates with a performance at 3:30 p.m. March 29 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville.
St. Columba is the Mother Church of the Diocese of Youngstown, which comprises the six counties of northeast Ohio: Mahoning, Trumbull, Ashtabula, Columbiana, Stark and Portage. The Thiel Choir is the invited guest of the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church has been active in the Alliance community since 1865, and the choir is helping them celebrate their 150th anniversary. Holy Trinity Lutheran church has been a recognized part of the Greenville area since 1865 and also celebrates their 150th anniversary this year. The choir is the guest ensemble for their Friends of Music at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church concert series.
The choir, under the direction of Dr. Michael Bray, will perform a variety of sacred a cappella works by Palestrina, Johann Pachelbel, Felix Mendelssohn, Lloyd Pfautsch, Craig Hella Johnson and Robert Wetzler as well as spirituals by Boniface Mganga and Moses Hogan. Organ accompanied works include “Jubilate Deo,” by Benjamin Britten and “Like As the Hart Desireth the Waterbrooks,” by Herbert Howells. Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Christ Lag in Todesbanden” and “Break Forth Into Singing” by Daniel Gawthrop are featured works on the program accompanied by string quartet, continuo and oboe.
