Assistant Surgeon General speaking at Thiel College as part of Miller Lecture Series

GREENVILLE, Pa.—Rear Admiral Richard Childs, M.D. is the speaker for the 2024 Professor David M. Miller ’61, H’20 Distinguished Lecture Series at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 22, in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.

Rear Admiral Childs will deliver a lecture titled “Commanding the Frontlines: An Admiral’s Odyssey from Ebola Crisis Management to Directing Heart, Lung, and Blood Research at the NIH,” providing a rare glimpse into the intersections of military leadership and cutting-edge medical research.

Childs has been a prominent figure in the United States Commissioned Corps since 1995, achieving the rank of Rear Admiral in 2015. In recognition of his exemplary service, he was awarded a second star in 2020 and currently serves as an Assistant United States Surgeon General and as the Scientific Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health.

The lecture, part of a series endowed by a generous gift from Dr. Jagdish N. Sheth H’07 and his wife, Madhu Sheth, stands as a pillar for academic discourse at Thiel College. This prestigious event is open to the public, free of charge, continuing the College’s tradition of bringing scholarly discussions to the community.

About Rear Admiral Richard Childs

Rear Admiral Childs is a distinguished graduate of Georgetown University and its Medical School. His postgraduate training encompasses an internship, residency, and a Chief Residency in internal medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville. His fellowships in Medical Oncology and Hematology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and NHLBI at the NIH, respectively, mark his esteemed clinical research career.

Renowned for his groundbreaking work in oncology, Childs’ research has significantly impacted the treatment of metastatic kidney cancer. He is credited with the landmark discovery that transplanted allogeneic immune cells can cure metastatic kidney cancer through a graft-vs-tumor effect, a finding published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
