Former Eastman Kodak Company employee and retired Chief Marketing Officer at Hillside Family of Agencies John Barr ’70 was the guest speaker for the Ruth A. Miller Senior Seminar on Jan. 22, 2020. Barr spoke to the students about the importance of being able to adapt to change, to own and embrace their mistakes, to stay positive, and to take advantage of the opportunities that may arise in their personal and professional lives. He said he wants students to be prepared at what life throws at them. He also used his own, personal stories to help the students realize that they will be thrown unexpected challenges throughout life and how to be prepared for it.
“Mr. Barr encouraged each of us to follow our passion, strive for a work-life balance, and most of all, to be adaptable and accept change. He illustrated to us through his life story that each of us will go through numerous monumental changes in life, but those who are successful are the ones who learn to accept change, the good and the bad, and adapt to them as they come. It is critical to embrace the life you're living, take calculated risks, and adapt at all times in order to be successful in your profession and personal lives.”—Mariel Hanely ’20
“As many of us are trying to land a career opportunity soon, John gave us insight as to what the interviewer wants to see. All managers want to see that the possible employee has integrity, intelligence and energy. Integrity is the most important of the three. People will hardly remember you for your career accomplishments, but rather for your integrity and lifestyle choices.”—Robert Micsky ’21
“He went through many life lessons that he found important, and I really enjoyed hearing. One of my favorites was, ‘talent is great, tenacity is greater.’ This proves that no matter how much talent you have, if you’re not willing to be tenacious and persistent, then you will not succeed. Another one that I really loved was, ‘learn to differentiate yourself.’ He encouraged us to find out what makes us unique and use it to our advantage in life.”—Brenna Parsley ’20
“John Barr touched on many other points. We should be curious and ask questions, be the first to go to work and last to leave, stay positive and be a chameleon. He meant by being a chameleon, we should change with our environment.”—Arianna Anderson ’20
“John’s story really spoke to me especially when he said about how he first viewed school. How he struggled in school and college, but never gave up on what he thought was his dream. He told us to never be unprepared for life or give up on yourself.”—Michael Howard ’21

Professor David Miller ’61 delivered the keynote speech for the event.
William King spoke to students at the Jan. 15 Ruth A. Miller Senior Seminar about how to prepare for the future and what to expect when they enter the workforce. According to the students, he also related the things he spoke about to every student at Thiel.
“Bill opened my eyes with the true importance of networking. He described that 75 percent of jobs are found through networking. He showed many sites to network with the main example being the Thiel database LinkedIn. Next, we performed an in-presentation practice of our elevator speech. Being in the business arena, you never know when you might meet your next connection. After the presentation, I will always ensure that I have a proper speech ready to express my benefits and work experience. I was deeply impressed with Bill King’s speech and will use his advice in the future.”—Robert Micsky ’20
“The most important general tip that he shared with us is that we need to circumnavigate the hiring process when seeking out jobs and make sure that our resume goes around HR and straight to the hiring managers. Once it is there, it is our job to make sure the resume is captivating appealing to the correct emotions and leaves a lasting impression for only being viewed for 15 to 20 seconds.”—Charlie Lichtenwalter ’21
“King gave many tips on talking with employers. He talked about being the Tylenol to the employer’s pain. By this he means when the employers talk about a problem, tell them how you can fix it.”—Arianna Anderson ’20
“One of the biggest takeaways from Bill’s presentation was when he said, ‘You want to sell your benefits, not your features.’ When looking for a new job it is important to show off your best qualities and you want to show them how you can answer their problems.”—Annmarie Moore ’20
“One particular piece of advice that stood out in his presentation was his recommendation to sell the advantages of younger workers. As college students and recent graduates, we often forget that we what we lack in experience can oftentimes be made up for an energy, optimism, enthusiasm, and flexibility. Mr. King helped each of us to see that we have many benefits to offer to prospective employers.”—Mariel Hanely ’20
“I had the privilege of sitting with Mr. King and had the opportunity to talk to him about many things. One of the things we talked about most was our shared interest of traveling and wine. As an international business major, it was very interesting to get to talk to him about where he has traveled and how he does business in these places. Overall, a very pleasant dinner.”—Brenna Parsley ’20

On Jan. 8, Thiel College graduate Sandy Parker ’82 spoke at the first Ruth A. Miller Senior Seminar about life and choices. She discussed many aspects of personal and professional life. She told students that what you think you want going into your first-year isn’t always what you want or need.
“The speaker for the evening of January 8th was Sandy Parker. She and I have crossed paths before when she interviewed me prior to the accounting consortium. Sandy and her husband, Rich, are highly respected members of the Thiel community providing various contributions to the college over the years.”—Griffin Curry ’20
“As a business major, I really enjoyed listening to Sandy’s methods of management and the deep connection that she had with her employees. While she gave many great quotes and life lessons, what stood out the most to me was how passionate Sandy was about her career. Her speech taught me that it is more important to find a career you enjoy and want to succeed at, rather than simply a higher wage.”—Bobby Micsky ’20
“Lessons learned
“Was loved by all her employees, she won many awards throughout her career. She used her experiences with her first boss to learn how to manage people, if you make a goal fun then your employees will do it for you.”— Angel Bartholomew ’20
“On the evening of January 8, 2020, Sandy Parker lead an etiquette dinner for the class. We learned how to conduct ourselves during a professional meal as well as the proper way to eat a meal and use utensils. This was a particularly helpful lesson as we ate food considered to be challenging including soup, spaghetti, and brownie sundaes. We also enjoyed a pleasant conversation at the table and were each able to take away valuable lessons for our futures.”—Mariel Hanely ’20

Communications collateral
Employees should update the logos used on institutional materials, including email signatures, letterhead, PowerPoint slides, etc.
Thiel College has used the shield and wordmark combination as the official institutional logo for more than a year. They are the only approved logo for academic co-curricular and institutional use. Additional athletic logo packages are also available.
Email signatures, brand resources, and a job request form are all available online. A Dropbox folder has been set up with instructions and the materials necessary to create new email signatures. Employees can find other Thiel College-branded resources including letterhead, logos and PowerPoint slides in the same folder.
Thiel College community members who need help with communications and marketing initiatives and collateral can now request those services with a job form. The request form is available on the communications and marketing webpage or linked directly below.
For more information, email the office.
Tomcat Tributes
Tomcat Tributes recognize the teamwork Thiel College employees exhibit each day. Employees can nominate co-workers for recognition in four categories (Random Act of Kindness, Going the Extra Mile, Had a Great Idea, Just Because).
