GREENVILLE, Pa.—“Jesus & Co.” author Bruce Hartman will share the experiences that led him to write his book about leading an ethical life and Christian life in business with Thiel College students as part of the Ruth A. Miller Senior Seminar on January 23.
Hartman was a mentor for Thiel College graduate and member of the Thiel College Board of Trustees Mike Zawoysky ’79. Zawoysky is the retired chief executive officer for Shoe Sensation Inc. and led a successful business career with the guidance and mentorship from Hartman. The two spent extensive time together throughout their career and in the book, Hartman states that “each project was completed thoughtfully with the right code of business.”
“I see it a great resource tool. When I first read it I loved it for the stories,” Zawoysky said. “I think the book is very authentic. It is a great educational tool.”
During Hartman’s professional career, he worked for a Fortune 500 company as CFO for over 30 years. In his book, Hartman tries to bridge the skeptical gap that sometimes exists between business and religion by showing how there is goodness in both. He tells a story that connects Jesus with the business world and shows that you can not only survive ethical issues in life but that you can thrive.
Hartman is coming to campus as part of the Ruth A. Miller Senior Seminar. The seminar provides the opportunity for Thiel College’s top business students to meet and interact with individuals who have enjoyed distinguished careers in the corporate and foundation worlds. Most of the speakers are Thiel graduates and are prominent leaders in business, industry and finance. The class is held annually each spring.
Hartman is the founder of Gideon Advisors, a Christian advisory firm committed to helping people navigate life and career transitions while advancing Christian values in the marketplace. Hartman was the executive vice president and chief financial officer at Yankee Candle Company, Cushman and Wakefield and Footlocker, Inc. During his tenure at Footlocker, the company rose from near bankruptcy to solid earnings and saw a stock price increase of 900 percent. “Jesus & Co.” offers lessons from Jesus and the Gospels to help people “not only survive, but thrive while swimming with sharks that surround” people in the workplace. Hartman completed seven years of theological education to receive a doctoral degree in ministry, “Jesus & Co.” presents the blending of both these worlds in an extraordinarily practical way to help other working Christians.
