Barry Stamm, M.D. ’70 appointed Chair of Thiel College’s Board of Trustees

GREENVILLE, Pa.—Barry Stamm, M.D. ’70 was appointed and ratified by the Thiel College Board of Trustees as its Chair during the board’s recent meeting.

Stamm had been Vice Chair of the Trustees and has been on the board since 2011. Stamm is also the Chair of the Thiel 2016 Capital Campaign—the largest fundraising effort in the College’s history. The Thiel 2016 Capital Campaign has raised $56 million of its $60 million goal.

“Thiel College has been such an important piece of my life. I’m honored to be selected by my fellow Trustees to chair the board of a great student-centered, liberal arts college,” Stamm said. “As we prepare to celebrate the historic milestone of our 150th anniversary, I am excited about the opportunity to help shape the College for the next generations of students to come.”

A native of Erie, Pa., Stamm has had a long career in ophthalmology with an emphasis in lens implant surgery and laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy. He practiced in his hometown for 30 years under Stamm Cataract and Laser Surgery before selling the business in 2008. He has served on the Boards of Trustees at UPMC Hamot Medical Center and Sight Center of Northwest PA.

“As a businessman and a physician, Barry Stamm is a trusted leader,” Thiel College President Troy D. VanAken, Ph.D., said. “His guidance and generosity have helped Thiel College immeasurably over the years. He has been an invaluable member of the Thiel 2016 Capital Campaign committee and has the College close to reaching a historic milestone. We expect the insights and expertise that made him an outstanding Chair for the Campaign will serve him well in his new role.”

While at Thiel College, he was a biology major and a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He received his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College, now the Drexel University College of Medicine, in 1974. Stamm and his wife, Carol (Yeager) Stamm ’71, have two adult children, Brian and Ashley.

Stamm succeeds Mark Benninghoff, M.B.A. ’82, who served as Chair for the last three years.

The Board of Trustees handles the oversight of the College, adopting rules, regulations and policies governing Thiel and exercising authority over curricular development, use of property, development of facilities and fiscal and human resources management. The Thiel College Board of Trustees meets formally three times a year on campus.
