Dr. Doug Hazlett received his Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from Kent State University and M.Ed. and B.M. degrees from Westminster College. Hazlett has served as an adjunct professor in the graduate programs at Gannon University and Edinboro University and undergraduate programs at Westminster College and Butler Community College.
During the 1980s, Hazlett was a high school music instructor in Ohio where his bands consistently competed in state marching and state concert band finals including receiving perfect scores his final year of teaching at state concert band finals. Hazlett’s music students went on to become award-winning band directors themselves as well as receive music scholarships and perform with world champion drum corps. During this time, Hazlett was also an adjunct music instructor for percussion studies at Westminster College, as well as a contest judge for the Ohio Music Education Association.
Hazlett’s career continued as an assistant high school principal, middle school principal, curriculum director and assistant superintendent. He has received recognition as a Pennsylvania Department of Education Distinguished Educator and recipient of PASCD’s 2001 State Supervision and Curriculum Development Award. Hazlett has presented at the National Staff Development Conference, Pennsylvania Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development State Conference, and the Pennsylvania State Title I Conference. He successfully completed training as a facilitator for the Pennsylvania Inspired Leadership Grow and Support training for school administrators. Through a contract with the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Hazlett mentored first-year principals in the region. Hazlett is a published author and serves as a manuscript reviewer for Pennsylvania Educational Leadership and Pennsylvania Teacher Educator.
Hazlett is active on campus and serves on many committees. Most of his Thiel career, he served as Department Chair whereby he oversaw two successful Pennsylvania Department of Education Major Reviews as well as the creation of the Thiel College PreK Counts Class on campus. The Education Department was twice recognized as a National Education Department of Distinction. Hazlett is the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2016 from The National Society of Leadership and Success. Currently, Hazlett is serving as a member of the Mercer County Head Start Policy Council and the Community Action Partnership of Mercer County Board of Directors.
His community service has included serving on the United Way of Mercer County Board of Directors (to include the Success by Six Liaison), Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Mercer County Children and Youth Services Advisory Board, Sharon Regional Hospital Behavioral Health Services Advisory Board, Butler County Community College Advisory Board (at LindenPointe), Sharpsville/South Pymatuning/Clark Community Affairs Committee, Mercer County Career Center Board, and West Middlesex School Board of Directors.
