Linn Receives Scholarship for National Wrestling Workshop


Jeff Linn, admissions, received a fully-funded scholarship to attend the National Wrestling Coaches Association Leadership Academy in Edwardsville Ill., May 29-31. Linn was chosen among coaches from Division I, II and III institutions.

Twenty-four coaches across the nation were selected to join the Academy this year. The two-day workshop will include presentations from six current and former head wrestling coaches from higher education institutions across the country. The group will be facilitated by Dr. Dan Gould of Michigan State University, a nationally renowned coaching development expert and the architect of the NWCA Leadership Academy. The NWCA and FCA-Wrestling have awarded each coach a full "scholarship" covering transportation, meals, lodging and tuition costs.


Balas Named Secretary for PennACE, Presents at Conference


Heather Balas, career services, was recently voted secretary of the PennACE organization (Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Employers). She will serve a two-year term and be sworn in at conference this week, where she is also the co-chair of the presenters committee and presenting an interactive session on excellence in social media. PennACE is a collaborative organization of career development and recruitment professionals that provides professional growth and networking opportunities designed to enhance career development practices for Pennsylvania college and university students and graduates.


First Hodge Institute for Teaching and Learning


The first Dr. Edwin Hodge Jr. Institute for Teaching and Learning at Thiel College began on May 14 (and will continue through May 23). This new initiative is focused on fostering highly engaged student learning in seminar settings. The first year of the Hodge Institute focuses on the Freshman Year Experience (FYS) courses. Twenty Thiel College professors are participating and will spend the time sharing and revising the syllabi for their FYS courses based on the knowledge and mentoring presented during the Institute.

Moreland Named SAAC Athlete of the Month


The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) announced that Tomcat softball player Kristen Moreland of Dover, Ohio, was been named Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Scholar-Athletes of the Month for May 2012.

Moreland graduated summa cum laude with a 3.98 grade point average and was recognized as the lone salutatorian at the College’s 138th Commencement Ceremony, which held on May 6.

She earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in accounting, business administration and fine art, along with a minor in English, while receiving departmental honors in each. She also is a recipient of the Dean’s Key, awarded to those students who made the Dean’s List during all eight of their semesters.

A four-year varsity letter winner with the softball program, Moreland’s 251 career strikeouts ranks first on Thiel’s all-time list, while her 21 career wins rank her third and her 34 career complete games tie her for third place. Moreland led the Tomcat softball program in victories in three of her four seasons.

Moreland has been recognized after each of the last three seasons as a member of the PAC Academic Honor Roll and was named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar Athlete following the 2011 season.

On campus, she wass a member of the English Honorary, Sigma Tau Delta, the Business Honorary, Chi Eta Sigma, and the Senior Honorary, Les Lauriers. Moreland had served as the treasurer of the Alpha Chi National honorary and was a member of the National College Athlete Honorary, Chi Alpha Sigma. She was the art editor for the College’s literary magazine, The Phoenix, and was named the College’s Student of the Month for March 2012.

Each month, SAAC members at a PAC school nominate a student-athlete to highlight based on academic and athletic accomplishments. Honorees must be a varsity member in their respective sport(s) and in their junior or senior year. Scholar-Athletes of the Month must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and be actively involved on his or her campus community.

Drop your boat (canoe or kayak) at the put-in below the dam in Pymatuning State Park near Jamestown, Pa.; drive to Riverside Park in Greenville; park your vehicle; from there, take the shuttle back to the put-in and then hit the water! Rain or shine…all class one water, no portages or obstructions. Approximately an 8½ mile reach. Typical single kayak paddle time is about 2 and a half to 3 hours.

Adult Coed Summer Recreational Soccer League


Shenango Valley Soccer Club is looking for male and female soccer players ages 19 and up to play in a new recreational league that will begin on Sunday, July 1 and run through Sunday, August 26. Games will be played on Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. and will consist of two 30-minute halves. Cost is $25 per player to cover shirt and field fees. Looking for at least four teams to start. A rotational schedule will be set depending on the number of teams registered. Contact Shenango Valley Soccer Club to register.
