Students learn about grief support during trip

The Department of Sociology’s Death, Dying and Bereavement class, led by Tami Micsky, recently visited the Highmark Caring Place, a center for grieving children, adolescents and their families. Students learned about the grief support program, principles of group support and gained an understanding of how children grieve. Students in the course were profoundly impacted by their visit and decided to sponsor Children’s Grief Awareness Day at Thiel College on Nov. 17. Children’s Grief Awareness Day began to help others understand the impact of death on children and their need for support.

The class hopes to raise awareness about grief issues for children with two events on campus.

Tables will be set up in the Howard Miller Student Center on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for people to make a butterfly to support grieving children. On Nov. 17, wear blue to support grieving children.
