Business and accounting students discuss their successes

The Thiel College Arthur McGonigal Department of Business Administration and Accounting has achieved 100 percent job placement for its 2016 accounting major graduates.

This marks the third year in a row in which all accounting majors have found jobs in their field within six months of graduation. Institutionally, over 94 percent of all Thiel College graduates from the past three years who reported were placed in jobs or graduate school.

“We are very proud of the success our accounting majors have achieved over the past several years,” Professor of Business Administration and Accounting and Department Chair Gary Witosky ’79 said. “It is truly a reflection of the dedicated work of our students, faculty, support staff and alumni—both inside and outside of the classroom. Our students are provided direct access to numerous employers seeking accounting graduates and interns. We also have a robust internship program that provides opportunities for our students to gain real-world experience, often leading directly to job opportunities. In fact, nearly half of next year’s graduating class returned to campus in September with a job offer waiting for them after they graduate!”

Disability Resource Center Minute

Director of the Disability Resource Center Tami Micsky discusses important issues regarding her office in the “Disability Resource Center Minute” monthly in T-Notes. If you have any questions, contact Micsky at ext. 2063.

October is Learning Disability Awareness Month, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Awareness Month and Dyslexia Awareness Month. One in five students across the country has learning and attention issues. This includes the 2.5 million who have specific learning disabilities and the 6 million who have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

One of the biggest challenges faced by individuals with learning disabilities is the overall lack of acceptance by society.  This month is an excellent time to gain a better understanding of learning disabilities. There are different kinds of learning disabilities. Most often they fall into three broad categories:

Other related categories include disabilities that affect memory, social skills, and executive functions such as deciding to begin a task. Many people think that students with learning disabilities have low intelligence or are “slow.” The fact is, students with learning disabilities typically have average to high average intelligence and many are considered “gifted.”
