Chi Eta Sigma induction, speaker featured at business seminar

Former Thiel College Professor John Logan ’65 spoke to the senior business seminar class of Prof. David Miller ’61. Logan is known as “Mr. Chi Eta Sigma” because he is the only Thiel College graduate to win the Loeb Gold Medal, which is awarded to the person who receives the highest grade in the state on their certified public accountant exam. He scored the highest in the state in 1969.

“Another thing he said that I thought was interesting was, ‘Life is a daily comprehensive final; there are all story problems and nothing looks like the homework.’ This quote was stimulating to me because it was great advice to give to us as we move on to life outside of college. No real life work project is ever going to be the same, and we must adapt to take on those challenges.” – Kristi Guritza ’16

“Throughout this portion, I derived a strong main point: learning is continuous; and during your career, you will have the opportunity to learn in many different fashions. Whether it be learning how to deal with processes within your business and local government, or learning how to handle different personalities and behaviors that are present among your coworkers. Learning and development are continuous far beyond graduation.” – Sam Passafiume ’16

“John Logan was actually selected to speak at the dinner because he is known as the father of Chi Eta Sigma. Mr. Logan definitely earned this title because in May of 1969, he received the Loeb Gold Medal. This award is presented to the person who receives the highest score on the [certified public accountant] exam each year in Pennsylvania. Mr. Logan is the only person in Thiel history to receive this award.” – Ryan Brumbaugh ’16

“One point that John stressed is that it is always better to complete something than turn it in late. The quality of the work will not be able to make up for missing the deadline. Another point John stressed was if you enjoy your job, you will never work a day in your life.” – Jeffery Jenkins ’16

“When he discussed being a professor he used the word ‘seduce.’ He wanted to lead, guide and motivate his students to learn. He did not want to force people to learn the material. He wanted them to be excited to learn.” – Carlee Jones ’16
