Disability Resource Center Minute

Director of the Disability Resource Center Tami Micsky covers important issues regarding her office in the “Disability Resource Center Minute” in this space in the first T-Notes of each month during the academic year. If you have any questions, contact Micsky at ext. 2063.

This month, she discusses disability symbols. In a few short weeks, students will be taking final exams. Just for fun, take this disability symbols test and see if you know what these symbols mean.

Possible answers:

    A. Access for Low Vision
    B. Accessibility
    C. Sign Language

    D. Braille
    E. Information
    F. Closed Captioning

Answers:

1. (B) The wheelchair symbol should only be used to indicate access for individuals with limited mobility, including wheelchair users. For example, the symbol is used to indicate an accessible entrance, bathroom or a phone that has been lowered for wheelchair users.

2. (F) This symbol indicates that a television program or videotape is closed captioned for deaf or hard of hearing persons. TV sets that have a built-in or a separate decoder are equipped to display dialogue for programs that are captioned.

3. (D) This symbol indicates that printed material is available in braille.

4. (E) The most valuable commodity in today’s society is information; to a person with a disability, it is essential. The symbol may be used on signage or on a floor plan to indicate the location of the information or security desk. At that location, more specific details or materials concerning access accommodations and services such as large print materials, audio cassette recordings of materials, or sign interpreted tours may be available.

5. (C) The symbol indicates that sign language interpretation is provided for a lecture, tour, performance, conference or program.

6. (A) This symbol may be used to indicate access for people who are blind or have low vision. These accommodations might include a guided tour, a path to a nature trail, a scent garden in a park, a tactile tour or a museum exhibition that may be touched.
