Prof. Shaffer's classes among visits made by Nicaraguan dance group

Members of the Daughters of Corn, the Nicaraguan dance group who performed at Thiel College on Monday evening, spent Monday and Tuesday discussing Nicaragua and answering questions in classes. They spoke to the macroeconomics classes of Professor Karen Shaffer, M.B.A., on Tuesday.

"These dancing, mission ambassadors enriched both classes with their insights into their cultural values, economic and educational challenges and their mission to improve the quality of living in Managua," Shaffer said.

Shaffer said the presentation covered a wide range of topics, including the impact of microloans and how iguana soup is a local remedy when people feel ill.

In all, the group made presentations to 12 other classes and also conducted two dance workshops. Professor of History and Core Curriculum Coordinator David Buck, Ph.D., organized the Daughters of Corn trip to Thiel College, which included scheduling the class presentations and events. He also coordinated housing arrangements for the performers.

Compas de Nicaragua, a non-profit organization that supports health and education projects in Nicaragua, sponsored the Daughters of Corn appearance.
