Program puts Thiel students in touch with educators in the field

Thiel College has partnered with local school districts for years to host college education majors in their classrooms. Students are given opportunities to observe teachers and practice teach. This year, Thiel College has enlisted three local principals to teach the seminar classes that coincide with the field experiences. Matt Dieter (Principal of Sharpsville Area Elementary School), Brian Bronson (Principal of East Elementary and Hempfield Elementary Schools) and Brian Tokar (Principal of Greenville Area High School) are functioning as adjunct professors and teach a one hour seminar class in their building with each cohort of college education majors. Additionally, each college student is paired with a teacher to gain practical teaching experience.

The initiative has been well received by local educators and college students. Dieter said “The Thiel College model is similar to the medical profession in that students are receiving hands-on experience in the setting in which they will work someday.”

Math education major Katelyn Downey said “There is a direct link between our professor and cooperating teacher.  My professor (Tokar) has given us copies of the school handbook, current newsletter and bell schedule. I definitely feel well prepared … and am excited about this semester.”

Bronson plans to share data informed decision making and data analysis for increased student achievement with his classes.

Dr. Doug Hazlett, Chair of the Education Department, said “having local principals involved with teaching our college education majors adds an additional perspective from current practioners who can add a great deal to our curriculum with regard to current educational trends.  The new teacher evaluation system is just one example that our principals are well versed in and are experts for our Thiel students.”
