4th Through 6th Grades
Courses for youth who are entering 4th-6th grade
in the fall of 2008. Youth
participate in the same four, one-hour classes each day. Every
effort will be made to accommodate your selections on a first-come,
first-serve basis. We retain the right to cancel any class that
has less than six campers by the deadline of June 13.
Class 1 class choices (9:00-10:00 a.m.)
Class 2 class choices (10:05-11:05 a.m.)
Class 3 class choices (11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.)
Class 4 class choices (12:35-1:35 p.m.)
CLASS 1: 9:00-10:00 a.m.
BRAIN TEASERS
This class will make you think outside of the box, by challenging you intellectually. You will get to investigate, explore, construct, and engage in order to find the solution to several problems/situations.

BREAKFAST & LUNCH FARE
Learn how to turn an egg into a delicious feast. Learn to make pancakes artistically. Learn the importance of breakfast and its nutritional value. Learn to create healthy salads, creative sandwiches and personalized pizzas. Learn how to garnish your dishes with fruit and vegetables.

COOL CHEMISTRY
Fake blood, silly putty, bouncy balls, invisible ink - these are just some of the cool things you can make using everyday materials and a little chemistry. Come and explore the exciting world of chemistry and you just might get slimed!

DRAWING
Bringing cartoons to life, redoing a masterpiece in your own world, dealing with realistic to imaginary sounds... exciting right? In this class, campers will learn how to draw their favorite cartoon characters, make their own comic strip, redo a masterpiece, draw how they feel in a self portrait, and get to do many other experimenting levels with this art.

MICROSOFT OFFICE
In this class you’ll
learn Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point. Begin by creating,
editing, saving, and printing all types of documents in Microsoft Word. Have
fun with Excel and learn the basics to create, edit, save and print
spreadsheets. Create effective Power Point presentations for
school and for your family, and make exciting slide shows with text,
sounds, and animation.

SIGN LANGUAGE
In America today, sign language is the third most highly used language. Campers will learn basic hand shapes and movements used in American Sign Language, along with number and time signs for colors, food and activities.

TENNIS
Match point...Bring your
racket and enjoy the sun while learning the fundamentals of tennis. You
will enjoy learning about beginning skills to the playing of matches. Class
is limited to 8 campers.

THE STOCK MARKET
This course is designed to explain how the stock market works. We will spend time looking at "Black Tuesday" and how the stock market crashed, then transition into the Stock Market today and the issues people are seeing. There is a virtual stock market we will participate in after the basic introductions are over. Instructor: Mr. Chris Edison
CLASS
2: 10:05-11:05 a.m.
BASIC MANDARIN CHINESE
Come learn about the Chinese culture and language! You’ll learn about Chinese holidays, how to pronounce, write, and speak the Chinese language.

BASKETBALL
Students will learn the fundamentals of ball handling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defense. Students will learn fundamentals through fun activities which consist of instruction, drills, and games. Students will need to bring their own tennis shoes.

BASKET WEAVING
Learn about the oldest human craft and make 2 or 3 useful baskets of your own to take home. We'll work with natural and colored materials as you learn basic techniques and customize your very own "cat head" and "egg" baskets. Students should bring an old towel - all other materials and tools will be supplied. Instructor: Mrs. Joy Strain
DESIGN
In art, many designs and patterns are used. Ever wonder what type of flower you could invent or what a house would look like if you designed it? This class will allow campers to design their own house, design clothing, and even a few other projects. It will allow the creativity of their imagination to flow through these designs and patterns.

INTERNET AND WEB PAGE DESIGN
Imagine
that you are starting a business creating and selling specialty items
on the World Wide Web. Your first job would be to create a web
page to spread the word about your new business. In this class,
campers will discover the wonders of the Internet, as well as, create
a basic web page that will advertise their new business adventure.

MARTIAL ARTS
In martial arts you will learn the meaning of Karate, Judo, Kung Fu, Goshin Jutsu. Your instructor will teach you basic moves so you can decide whether you want to pursue martial arts after College for Kids. Instructor: Mr. Marshall Norman
MATH MASTERS
Utilize your math problem solving strategies to figure out math puzzles and riddles, plan Challenge 24, design your own math game, and test your math intelligence.

THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR (GETTYSBURG)
This course will be an in depth study of the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Big ideas that will be discussed are, but not limited to: Generals, Battle tactics, Military apparatus and weapons, Geography of Gettysburg, and the cause of the battle.

CLASS 3: 11:30-12:30 p.m.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A GAME SHOW CONTESTANT?
Campers will get to experience playing many popular game shows. These games will include Jeopardy, 1 vs 100, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and more. Students will also have the opportunity to design and instruct their own game.

CFK NEWSPAPER
Together with your fellow campers, create the CFK Newspaper. Campers will take pictures of different classes and write articles that correspond with each class. Students will also gain the experience of designing and laying out the paper.

FRISBEE GOLF
Learn to play Frisbee golf, as well as the rules and regulations, as you play Thiel’s challenging course. Participants need to have at least one Frisbee, but having at least three of different weights is recommended.

IT'S PLAY TIME
Calling all directors! Let
your imagination go wild as you put on a production. This includes
a lot of teamwork, picking roles, and making props and costumes. The
actor in you will come out as we play games and work on your production.

MAGIC
Perhaps Harry Houdini or
David Copperfield began their careers in a College for Kids camp...they
had to start somewhere! Here is your opportunity to start by
learning the basics of magic. Campers will work with cups, balls,
and rubber bands. They will do card tricks and pseudo-psychometry
as well as newspaper and rope magic. Campers may perform some
of their magic on the last day!

MARTIAL ARTS II
Campers will learn more advanced skill and techniques.

PAINTING
Do you feel like painting with your fingers, experimenting with different colors, or maybe even incorporating different paints into a work of art. This class will teach you how art was like in the past to the modern world. Projects will be done with splatter painting, experimenting with acrylic, and even water color. Instructor: Miss. Emma Huth

3D ARTS AND CRAFTS
Playing around with jewelry, clay, and cut out shapes are a few of the projects that will be dealt with in this class. Campers will have a hands on experience with different art materials, and they will also be able to explore their own imagination.

ADVANCED MAGIC
Here is your opportunity to review the magic you
learned in Beginning Magic. Advanced Magic campers will learn new card
tricks and other magic tricks using homemade props.

Write poetry, rhyme, and create your own short
story complete with illustrations. Instructor: Mr. Chad Gongaware
FUN DESSERTS & CREATIVE DECORATING·
Learn to create fun desserts using a variety of popular ingredients. You will be taught the importance of planning and gathering ingredients as well as the appropriate mixing techniques. Several decorating ideas will be taught emphasizing individual creativity.

ORIGAMI
Come be creative with paper! Students will be able to create a variety of origami pieces, such as birds, flowers, and planes. Students will create a new origami every day.

SPAIN TRAIN
“Hola alumnos y bienvenidos a Tren España.” (“Hello students and welcome to Spain Train.”) Campers will learn the basic pronunciations for vowels and consonants. Campers will also be introduced to numbers, colors, months, seasons, days of the week, and even a few phrases. “Va a leo tus eso verano.” (“See you this summer.”)
