A Message from the Dean

T-shirts from Move-In Day

Mike McKinney

Dear Thiel Parents,

As we begin another fantastic year at Thiel College, I would first like to take this opportunity to welcome the parents and family members of the class of 2016. As written on the t-shirt in the featured photo, we hope you and your family enjoyed the “big day”. We are thrilled to have you joining our newsletter community, and more importantly, the Thiel Family. I would also like to welcome back our returning parents. I’m sure many of you remember your son’s or daughter’s move-in events like it was yesterday. It’s hard to believe how fast time flies.

For those of you new to our newsletter community, this is designed to serve as an informal communication piece that will be sent out periodically throughout the year. We will provide you with updates on activities and happenings around campus, advice and resources regarding current issues related to our students, and information about student life at Thiel College. I also like to include lots of photos from around campus.

As a parent myself, I strongly value your partnership and understand the important role you have in helping your child to succeed at college. I am committed to keeping you informed so you are in a better position to help. So please contact me if you ever have any questions, suggestions, or if there is something that you would enjoy reading about. I promise to do my very best to respond quickly.

Finally I just want to tell you that we are so excited to be working with you and your child, and so appreciative of your trust in us. Please stop by our offices to say hello while visiting campus, and please visit often! We always love to see our parents and families. Best wishes on the year ahead and I hope you enjoy the newsletter!

Sincerely,

Mike McKinney, ‘02
Dean of Students

Family Matters

Who to Call for Assistance

Students receiving help from The Learning Commons

Parents are often the first sounding board when a student is having difficulty, especially in the first couple of years of college. This is one reason why our partnership is so important. If you ever become concerned about your son or daughter's social adjustment to college or situations with housing and other non-academic issues, please urge them to seek help in the Student Life Office, or contact Mike McKinney, Dean of Students, for assistance at 724-589-2600 or mmckinney@thiel.edu.

If you ever become concerned with your son or daughter's academic adjustment, please encourage them to visit the Library and Learning Commons, or contact Allen Morrill, Executive Director of the Library and Learning Commons. He can be reached at 724-589-2124 or at amorrill@thiel.edu. Both staffs are very committed to student success and are trained to help out. So please encourage your student to take advantage of the available resources.

Thiel Parent and Family Council

In addition to the many other resources available to parents on campus, we also have a very active Parent and Family Council. The Thiel Family Council is a group of parents that serve as an advisory board to the College and a resource to other parents. This is a great way to become involved at Thiel. They volunteer their time for events like Registration Days, Orientation, and other special activities. They also contribute in a number of other ways.

If anyone is interested in learning more about or participating as a member of the Thiel Family Council, please contact Darlene McClintock at 724-589-2027 or by email at dmcclintock@thiel.edu. You are also encouraged to visit the Parents and Families page on our site.

The Performing Arts

Charlie Brown Goes to College

Charlie Brown

This year, in what may have been the last year of long standing tradition at Thiel College, first-year students got to see a spectacular performance of Charlie Brown Goes to College from their very own Thiel Players. For years now, the Thiel Players have come back early to perform this show for orientation, which was written and directed by our much-loved Theatre Director, Dr. William Robinson. This was a very special performance as Dr. Robinson will cap-off a 39-year long career at Thiel College with his retirement this spring. Congratulations to the Thiel Players and to Dr. Robinson on another wonderful performance!

The Marching Pride

Tomcat Pride

The Tomcat Marching Pride debuted at Thiel's first home football game of the season. In just their third season, the band is 75 members strong and has already become a huge part of the game day atmosphere. Congratulations to the band on a job well done, and thank you for all of your hard work!
