Director of Choral Activities

The Thiel College Department of Performing Arts seeks an enthusiastic and highly capable individual to serve as the Director of Choral Activities. This tenure-track position will begin in academic year 2017/18.

For 150 years, Thiel has honored its Lutheran heritage through its choral traditions.  The ideal candidate will continue this tradition and also expand Thiel’s choral ensembles to include, for example, gospel choir or other a capella forms.  In this and other ways, the choir director will provide vision and direction for the choirs and assist the College in fulfilling its goals of fostering among all students an appreciation for the creative arts and sustaining a reputation for excellence in choral performance.

Currently, the Director of Choral Activities conducts the Thiel Choir, the Thiel College Chamber Singers, and the Thiel College Hand bell Ringers.  Additional activities include teaching courses within the music minor and the core curriculum, as well as private instruction in voice.  This individual also will coordinate outreach and travel opportunities for the choirs and will actively recruit students to the institution and to the department, its courses of study, and its choirs.

The preferred candidate will have a Doctorate in Choral Conducting or Doctorate in Music and two years of successful secondary or post-secondary experience as a director of choral ensembles. (A candidate with a master’s degree and five or more years of experience will be considered for annually renewable appointment at the rank of lecturer).  Also highly valued will be keyboard/choral accompanying skills; proven ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with music colleagues; a record of successful recruiting, and evidence of scholarly and creative activities in choral performance.

Interested applicants should send a letter of interest; curriculum vitae; graduate transcripts, a statement of teaching philosophy, and contact information for three professional references to employment@thiel.edu (preferred method) or to:  Jennifer Clark, Director of Human Resources, Thiel College, 75 College Avenue, Greenville, PA 16125.  A high quality video file of recent ensemble conducting may be required at a later date.   Review of applications will begin on December 10, 2016, and will continue until the position is filled.

Thiel College is committed to attracting a culturally and professionally diverse faculty and staff who engage our students by providing a rich and fulfilling curricular and co-curricular experience.
