Kulikova joins Department of Media, Communication and Public Relations

GREENVILLE, Pa.—Thiel College announces the addition of Visiting Professor of Communication Svetlana Kulikova, Ph.D., to the Department of Media, Communication and Public Relations.

Kulikova will lead the department’s new public relations, advertising and integrated marketing communication major, teaching primarily public relations courses. Her academic and professional experience includes an assistant professorship at Georgia State University in the department of communication and roles as journalism department chair and public relations director for American University of Central Asia. She also worked as a media and publications consultant in non-profit and international organizations, including the International Research and Exchange Board, the Urban Institute, and the National Democratic Institute. Most recently, Kulikova worked as a freelance writer, editor, researcher and public relations consultant with a focus on Kyrgyzstan and other post-Soviet countries. Her main interests are international public relations and post-Soviet journalism.

 “I have known Dr. Kulikova for more than 20 years, and I am thrilled that she is joining the Thiel faculty,” Chair of the Department of Media, Communication and Public Relations Dane Claussen, Ph.D., said. “Dr. Kulikova always has been highly student-focused in her teaching at Georgia State University and in Kyrgyzstan, and she is a fine researcher. Thiel is lucky to have her.” Claussen is also the James Pedas Professor of Communication and executive director of the James Pedas Communication Center.

In 1993, Kulikova earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and literature from Kyrgyzskij Gosudarstvennyj Nacionalnij Universitet in Kyrgyzstan; a Master of Arts in political science from Central European University, Budapest, Hungary in 1995; a Master of Science in mass communication and journalism from Kansas State University in 1997; and a doctorate in mass communication and public affairs from Louisiana State University in 2008.

Kulikova is a member of the International Association for Media and Communication Research, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, and the International Studies Association. Since 2008, she has authored more than 15 academic papers and presentations, many relating to Kyrgyzstan and central Asian media and journalism.
